Fiddleback User Pics

Well I'm no Vance or Mistwalker but I had to give the new Recluse a try in the kitchen tonight.

Ignore the Global santoku off to the side. It was there just for back up.

Starting to develop some character already!

The extra belly on the Recluse was really appreciated when trying to get into the avocado halves in order to pre-cube them. The blade shape was near perfect for this.

All in all I am glad that the Fiddleback is not my only kitchen knife, it is not especially well suited to mincing and dicing as you cant really rock it, but then again it was never designed for this type of use. I just really wanted to get a patina started and the veggies really did that for me. This is my first O1 knife that I have actually used and I am impressed with all of the colors that develop! Much more so than my A2 knives. Well, OK, not much more, but perhaps just a 'lil more? Anyway now she's really mine.

P.S. Sorry for the poor quality cell phone pics. I am awaiting a proper camera, perhaps sometime around christmas. :)

That's the way I prefer to patina my knives, and I love the patinas that can be done on O-1. The Recluse is a great hunting knife and a good all around user, but it doesn't really shine in the kitchen like the Woodsman or as I suspect the Woodchuck does.

thanks D. love the handle. but, what you can't see is the grind on this guy. it is 1/8" with a full height grind. the thing can cut! :D

Oh, I can see that grind line and that it is full flat :) Those are my favorites! Didn't know for sure that it was 1/8 though, I bet it slices like a razor!

Cool carving Joe.

TPVT's Bushfinger made quick work of this coconut for a refreshment.

Am I the only one who sees a 'signature' lanyard hole in this pic … ? have I been looking at Fiddlebacks / this thread for too long … ?

Think I'm gonna take a break …

Made some guacamole last night with my Terrassaur, sorry no pics. I heard some one around here cuts up a little extra onions and garlic to help the patina form on their Kephart. So I thought I'd give it a try...

Ahh... the smell of oxidation.

Yep, after a while you see them all over the place :)

Yep, food prep is a great way to patina a knife, I just get impatient sometimes :)

Received my new woodchuck from the Fiddleback Friday a couple weeks ago... this is seriously the best knife. I love the size and weight, and the edge is the best yet. Can do nice detail work with this knife or use it heavy... I'd say this is the best balance of detail and size of all the knives.

My first Fiddleback, a Scandi Kephart. I'm very impressed with the attention to detail that Andy puts into these knives

I'm a little concerned though as I had some rolls and minor chips in the edge after some very light use. I have a few scandi knives and I've never had this issue before. I just hope it's not going to be an ongoing issue. I don't have a very good camera so I wasn't able to capture a good shot of the edge damage.

Here's a pic I took just before I tested it out a bit.

It's O1 steel. The wood was cedar. I was a little blown away after I took a look at the edge. Like I said, I've never run into this issue after such minimal use before. Can't lie, I'm a little bummed/concerned about it... Hopefully I wont run into this issue again. I sent an email regarding my concern, but haven't heard back yet. I'm sure Andy is just busy grinding steel...

Just saw the second e-mail and replied. The first one got stuck in my spam box. This thread is definitely NOT the appropriate place to discuss this issue, but since it is HERE, I will address it here and post my response e-mail. Generally I try to handle warranty issues privately, but certainly I've never heard of any knifemaker addressing it in the Pics thread.

Good enough time as any to mention that I am scaling back Scandi production. I've never liked Scandi's, and the sales of them are way down too. Au-revoir Scandi edges!

Sorry I missed this Dennis. Please send the knife home. It is a warranty situation. I need to evaluate it. You will be due either a refund or a new knife. Your choice. I will refund your shipping costs as soon as I get the knife back.

You can’t listen to the general public on a forum about what is the issue with a knife. A scandi is a 12.5 degree bevel to zero. This means there is no such thing as grinding it too thin. Possible problems include, heat treat issues, inclusions in the steel, and even bad or mislabeled steel from the supplier. I’ve not had any complaints about the other 3 knives from the bar, or the other 7 knives from the HT cycle, so I doubt those are the cause, but I definitely want to test the knife and make sure.

I’m surprised to hear you’ve never had to fix any Scandi edge. I own a bunch of them and they need maintainance all the time. It’s the weakest kind of grind, and prone to this kind of problem. I’ve had three edges ‘fail’ in my 3000+ knives. They all were Scandi’s. I fixed one once and sent it back only to have the guy send it back to me again with the same ‘problem’. So, I sent the knife into a lab and had it tested. They couldn’t find anything wrong with the HT. The Rockwell hardness was the same all over the blade, and the grain structure was perfect.

That said, your satisfaction is very important to me, and I see this as a refund or replace situation. If you choose replacement, you can pick whatever knife you want. I’m going to credit you with whatever you paid for this knife, but you don’t have to have the same thing made up.

Please feel free to call me if you need anything.

Andy, just replied to you email. Sorry to have mentioned the issue in this thread!

Carry on, guys!

No problem Dennis. We'll get you a new knife right away!

Fine lookin' grub and a mighty fine lookin' little knife … I'm likin' that a lot … (a statement that has been known to be followed by a sudden reduction in funds) …

The Runt is a cool little edc knife. If you like it a lot, then you ought to keep your eyes open on Fridays...it's been about six or eight weeks since he made one so one will likely pop up pretty soon.

Yessir, you nailed it … I was there in time, but a sweet Sneaky Pete caught my eye and well …

Maybe a Runt is in the cards down the road …

Thanks again.

Yeah, I don't blame you...lol, I'd have taken the Sneaky Pete too. I have edc's, I want a Sneaky Pete when the right one pops up :)
