I guess if we could get a better Barlow than Swayback because of competition, then we should go that way. Hey, I don't have a Barlow in the drawer yet!

I voted Barlow…like the pattern, and it would be much easier to get produced.

If it comes down to a Swayback from Case, they are not entirely small run friendly, but we have certain “ins” there.:D

If Case, then CV should not be a problem, if not, those of you who prefer Carbon may have to settle for D2….I’m pushing for D2 because it really should not alienate any of those potentially interested in this project, either manufacturer or buyer.

Jigged bone makes the most sense, it is readily available and all manufacturers work with it. Domestic production makes the most sense, due to the high costs of duties and shipping, especially these days.

Originally I voted for a Trapper pattern. Since that one didn't make it to the finals amongst the big two, I decided the Swayback would be a decent substitute.. However, now after reading STeven's post and the rest of the responses by my fellow members in this thread, I am inclined to go with the Barlow pattern instead for the overall good of this Club Knife project and the many other options available that lend itself to this pattern. I would like to also emphasize that I am in agreement with the embolden text above and prefer a premium heat treated D-2 steel over carbon. I also like Jigged bone as the scale material for the handle for the reasons stated above and because of its very handsome aesthetics, and truth be told jigged bone exudes the Traditional slipjoint appearance like no other.

I would like to see the blade or blades have Traditional geometry as well, such as swedges and matchstiker pulls, or at least long pulls if possible.

In closing I would like to THANK STeven and Gus and whomever else may be involved in this Traditional Club Knife venture. Personally, I am much obliged to you fellows for all your extra efforts thus far and going forward in the near future for such a worthwhile project!

I voted for swayback a while back, but would change my vote to barlow if I could. Reasons being:

cost: probably be able to get one for cheaper due to more options on manufacturers. hasn't hit us too bad, but starting to feel the pinch. let's get this sucker going before wifey puts the kaibosh on discretionary spending!

bolster: someone pointed out that the enlarged bolster would be awesome for custom stamp/engraving.

handle materials: two words (not necessarilly together): GEC and acrylic!!!!!

While I realize that most of you are just expressing your opinions….do you REALLY want plastic handles on a traditional knife that represents a year of BladeForums Traditionals?

I’m a stag and pearl guy myself, and am quite surprised with the amount of responses indicating plastic scales as a preference….I thought some sort of bone would be a clear favorite.

I love bone handles. It's definitely my favorite handle material. BUT, I love the look of the old celluloid pens and pocket knives. Some of the colors and designs are without compare. BUT, I hate the maintenance issues involved with celluloid. Some of the acrylics out there come very close to celluloid in color and depth. Plus, for something like a barlow that was often an advertising or giveaway knife, I think the acrylic handle fits right in with the spirit of the pattern.

I just got a swayback and would like to try a barlow, so barlow for me. Jigged bone for the handle would be nice but a plastic jig would work for me. Hurry before my wife says no more knives.:(:D

I voted barlow simply because I just got a Case swayback. As for handles a bone or even a very nice wood works for me.

Actually, four votes were taken from the Swayback, three changed their minds, and one could not afford it.

And three votes were added to the Barlow, so it stands now at 65 Barlow and 58 SB.

If everybody who has voted on this does commit to the choice then there will be no problem this year in getting the numbers in.

Mind you, it is a rather 50:50 situation but I'm sure quite a few people will crossover to the Barlow when it is eventually chosen.(Not sure I will though) Time to reconsider and opt for a Teardrop Jack....that's a nice compromise between the 2 patterns!!

Jim, I'm glad someone is keeping track!

willgoy, after all the steps we've gone through, I imagine it would be tough to change to yet another pattern. A Teardrop is a great pattern! You buy a Barlow this year, and I'll do my best to help get a Teardrop on the books for next year!!:)
No, I'm not running for public office!:D

I'll look into it:D

But only if you are President of next year's selection committee:thumbup:

Whatever is chosen, a lot of people are going to be happy!

Well, you never know what small, struggling knife company might be able to do.
One may be surprised at what options might be available.
I could see both knives being available, and Case not being the only option for a swayback.
Me, I voted for the swayback, but a barlow would be very welcome in my EDC line up.
I hope someone remembers to ask the right questions of the right person.
Who knows?
As a good accountant, I know how things can be finnagled to make things work.

Keep Care,

Pappy

Okay, now you have my attention. I haven't voted, but if we go with a "small, struggling knife company" there is a good chance I'd be in regardless of the pattern.

Didn't one of the knife makers mention jigged micarta as a good inexpensive, but good looking alternative for expensive stag? I'm not sure I'd go for acrylic or "plastic" either, but I thought I saw some very nice examples of jigged micarta that looked great. I could be wrong, though.
