Firearm question

Nice long thread that I don't need to read - as I am sure someone has already given my advice....

Mossburg Tactical shotgun - 12 to 14 shot. No reason to go with 00 buck or whatever. Good bird shot is the way to go. Plus, if any ahole hears you racking the shotgun - odds are, if they have ANY brains in their head - they are gonna split. NOBODY goes against a shotgun - period.

People with brains do not break into homes when someone is present.
I am always surprised to hear how many people leave their doors unlocked. I am a New Yorker originally and always lock up.

I recall coming home once, after a long trip, and we found our door in the hallway...yes, in the hallway, not open.
Some creeps took it off the hinges.
Their van was full, so they couldn't steal anything from us. They had already taken too much for the van....cleaned out 5 other apartments.
It was Labor Day weekend.

I keep my doors and windows locked. If someone breaks in, they are loony and I won't give any warning.

Smart criminals know to knock first or ring the doorbell. They don't want to find the homeowner staring at them with a 357, loaded with Remington 357 Golden Sabers.

I used to use 357 - 110 grain loads on the assumption that I would want to limit penetration. But with all the chunky criminals here in Illinois, I want sufficent penetration.

No warning will be given. If someone breaks into my home, then they are out to get me and mine. These sorts of folks won't blink at the sound of a shotgun.

Are you sure?

Ever have an intentional home invasion for revenge, a knock down wreck the house 2AM fight, throw the perp out and hold him at gunpoint and have the fool scream shoot me and close the distance? Granted it was only a PPK but a gun never the less. What do you do then? Maybe you're to exhausted to close with him again?

My two german shepards sent him running. Not the gun. It was a bad night.

Angry people or people drunk or on drugs sometimes just don't threaten with a gun. If they do you may only have the advantage for seconds or moments in which time you'd better cuff them and neutralize them before they figure they can take you. It doesn't make sense to rational people, but it happens.

My .02 worth.

None of us want to shoot a bozo in the wrong place at the wrong time. You can color it any way you like, but most of us have a little window inside us that will test positive or negative on a stranger in the home. Some say this is a weakness. And it could happen too fast, so fast you don't have time to decide if he's just a kid looking for a VCR and a fix, or much worse. Luck and magic and religion take hold here I guess.

No one wants to shoot a crummy scumy kid. No one wants the crummy scum to shoot them, either.

I used to mess with #4 shot, Duck & Pheasant loads, on the grounds that I wanted to limit penetration in an apartment. But a load like that will still go through a lot of drywall. Then I switched to some heavier #2 shot. Now I just follow Massad Ayoob's advice and load it with 00 buck and forget it. I'm in a house now, and when I shoot something I want it to stop.

For a woman, I have heard that an ideal setup is a good guality auto-loading 20 guage with heavy shot. Light recoiling and hits plenty hard and is fast.

Cooper likes the double barrel coach gun because it is short and handy, can take 3" magnum loads, and his has a shot cuff on the butt with extra rounds. I can see the logic, but if I was that concerned about length I would get what some of the police use, which is something like a Benelli entry shotgun with a 14" barrel, and just pay the $200 federal tax on it. It would at least give me more than 2 rounds to hand, and get them out very quickly.

I guess no one has mentioned the flame thrower for home defence because flame retardant asbestos furniture is getting harder to find.

I mentioned dynamite. Does that count?

DGG,

I agree with almost everything you've said.

I heartily disagree with the concept of "intimidation factor". I don't care if a threat is intimidated. If he's leaving, I'll let him go, unless I've seen him/know he's committed a violent felony. If he's a threat, I'll shoot him.

I could care less if he's intimidated.

"He got me, Earl! But, at least I wasn't intimidated..." :D

I don't know. I'm of the opinion that most breakins are committed by cowards who will take off if everything isn't going right. The sight of someone standing in the front door ratcheting a shell into a 12 gauge pump would show that the person is very serious about his defense. Unless the bad guy is high, an assassin, or just stupid, I think he will turn and run without a shot being fired.

On another note, I'd be very careful about leaving an unloaded gun lying around in a house with kids. At night, when everyone is tucked in it might be okay. I think a person should be able to quickly load a firearm.

my opion is if you got a shooting range near where you live and they rent guns for you to shoot there. shoot different calibers and types...The One You Hit With Best go with... if you dont hit your tsrget even a tank wont be any good to you.

You, Sir, are as close to the heart of the matter as any one else present. Very often, one will buy his chosen defensive weapon based on aesthetics. Or a department will issue one specific model to their officers. Then its practice, practice, practice until you fit yourself to the gun, which is backwards. Nice job!
