First Annual Pay It Forward Buildoff

Erin, Can't wait to see how that turns out! I got my scales acraglas'd up, pretty happy how it turned out so far.

It's far from done... but here are a few more progress shots, where not much is accomplished.

First pic is the bar of DHIII W2 where I will be getting my blade. You can also see the CAD template.

I cut a piece from the W2 bar, ground off the scale on the KMG and squared up the edges on the mill.

The bar was a bit thick (and NOT uniform in thickness) so I milled it down to about 0.15".

Spotting some of the more-important holes (e.g. pivots and stop points).

I have a few more pictures that haven't been uploaded yet. The blade is basically rough-profiled and ready to start grinding of the bevels. I'm waiting on a shipment of economy 36-grit belts from Pops to finish grinding the titanium handles. I'm trying to come up with a better solution than using expensive Blaze belts on Ti... we'll see how it works out.

QUESTION FOR THE GROUP:

Has anyone come up with a Pay It Forward logo or anything for these knives? I'm thinking about ordering a new batch of stencils from Ernie, and would not have a problem with adding a build-off logo to the blade... if there is such a beast.

I think that is a great Idea! I will send you my entry:D

Sure Erin, I don't mind sending mine to you for etching either....

EVERYONE SEND THEIR BLADES TO ERIN FOR ETCHING!!!!!!! :D

hey that's a great idea Erin!

If anyone has a design for the First Annual Pay It Forward Buildoff, please post it in the thread. I think anyone should have a crack at submitting designs for it, but only participants in the Buildoff get to vote. Does that sound fair?

When would a logo be needed for this? Let's set a timeline and see what happens.

I'm gonna start on my logo design asap! (even though I'm pretty sure I won't know how to put it on my knife : ) )

Unfortunately, i do not have a stamp or an etching machine. Mine will be carved into the spine somehow. I can still draw a few designs for it :) Ok, so i finally quit the burl hunting for a few days and got to get into the shop. It is still pretty rough, but i wanted to etch it to see if i was getting a good pattern in the carving or not....Don't laugh.

I have one almost finished up, needs final edge and a Sheath. I thought I would post a progress photo:

Nice work, Ryan; I can't believe you are already done! Great job on the sweeping plunge line, too.

What do you have planned for the sheath?

Mike, the engraving rocks!!! Looking forward to the finished product!

OK, I have worn out 2 belts and LORD KNOWS how much 1018 trying to get the sweep going... I think mine will have a straight plunge!

The wife can't take much more of my expletives! :D

Thanks Paul I am going to go with Leather, I haven't taken on the kydex beast yet. We will see how it goes.
Charlie I know how you feel it took me way too many tries, but keep at it!

Ryan, how did you make that poll happen? I wanna do a poll in this thread for peeps favourite design, but I just can't seem to figure it out:confused:

Lorien, I think if you edit your original post "Go Advanced" there should be at the bottom some boxes you can check one says create poll and then you need to put in the number of Choices/Options. then save. It should pull up the poll after that....

Guys, a sweeping plunge is FAR FAR easier to feather in with a file when you first try to do one than it is with the belt grinder. IMHO :)

Splain Lucy! I've used about all the mild steel I want to sacrifice for this and it STILL SUCKS!!!

I have an idea in my mind of how to flow the plunge with a file, but I'd like your thoughts... :D

I have a piece of O1 with a design on it BEGGING me to profile it....
