First Annual Pay It Forward Buildoff

Lorien,

Just talked to my niece about this project and she is STOKED! She started crying when I told her about it. Michael (her husband) and I have been a lot closer than she and I ever have, but this may have broken the barrier! She is going to come over and help me tweak the design a bit so that it will be a combination or her and my efforts. I really appreciate you coming up with this!

Oh, OOPS! All I have done is e-mail Lorien and I'm sure a couple of you are wondering what the heck I'm talking about... My nephew Michael is on his 3rd tour in Afghanistan. I want to make the "A" model for him to carry as a duty knife since he plans to volunteer for a 4th tour in July. He's a great kid with a degree in engineering and a heart made of gold...

James, way to up the bar a bit and make the rest of us look lazy! LMAO! Great work, as usual, thus far!

Charlie

wow, that's awesome. Not sure what else to say, last thing I expected here were tears, but these sound like the good kind.

14 builders and few months- this is gonna be good!

ps- I won't be mailing the designs off until mid next week, so if you wanna be involved, it's not too late. In fact, I can't see myself refusing any maker who wants to take part, at any time. It's more convenient for me to do one mass mail out, but if I have to do a dozen, I won't complain as this is all going to good causes.

You won't complain to us you mean.... :)

That dang James is got a head start.... me and some Bama boys need to visit him and break his hands ;)

Yikes, James...I might be that far along by June 30th ;) Are we all posting 'WIP' photos in this thread?

Lorien, I'm just planning on working off of your picture so I don't need a drawing mailed to me. Would you mind posting approx. dimensions of design 'A' though, if it wouldn't be too much trouble?

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen. Like anything else, the biggest key to getting a knife done is to just START doing it.

I doubt Lorien would mind any progress photos, I get the impression he enjoys that kind of thing ;) I'm not going to do a full WIP because I don't really have any magical tips or tricks to share that y'all don't already know. But I'll be happy to update as I hit each major stage of development if anyone's interested.

Don't hold your breath, once this baby gets ready for HT (next couple days, probably) there's going to be at least a two-week wait before anything else happens with it. I farm my HT out to Peters' and I like to send at least a dozen blades at a time to keep costs under control. So there'll be a delay while I get a few more blades ready and of course shipping time back-and-forth. I know... what a tease, right? :D

Lorien, if you feel the dimensions I worked up for you are reasonably close, please feel free to post the pic I sent you.

Hey man, I saw the original drawing the same time everyone else did. I just went to work while everyone else was sitting around talking about it :D

gentlemen, please feel free to post anything and everything related to your progress, ideas etc relating to this project.

I would prefer to mail the patterns out to those who've provided their address. There is a lot that can be lost in translation and I'd prefer to be able to follow through with my end of the bargain. A curve here, a line there...it's just much better to have everyone starting out on the same baseline and go from there.

You're working... I'm creating "art" :D

I've already made my drawings up and sorted materials out for it. Probably forge the blade out Monday. I dunno if I'm going to do a WIP or just post it with a series of pictures showing the process.... up to Lorien.

My wife and I have an agreement... I work on knives Monday-Friday until 7pm Central Time, Saturday and Sunday belong to her. One of the things I lost through the years was "balance" and I'm not going to lose it again.

I'll leave the question of work vs. art to others. ;) I definitely understand you balancing family-time with shop-time, bro.

I'm truly looking forward to seeing what all of you come up with. I feel a good kind of "pressure" by committing to this project. Lorien's design isn't something I would have come up with on my own, and already the challenge has made me rethink some things and help me stretch my skills a bit. This is going to be fun :)

got my steel today!

and... I just figured out how I'm going to pay this forward!

trying to add a poll to this thread so folks can vote for their favourite design, but I'm just not getting it. Anyone able to give me a hand with this?

Lorien. Have you mailed out the designs yet, I am chomping at the bit to get this project started.

should get them mailed off tomorrow or the day after

Proof that I started work. Proof that I'll need every minute to meet the deadline.

I'll have scans of the designs in the mail tomorrow. Should've been today but I'm relying on a friend to print them who forgot to have them for today.
