[FIRST LOOK] ZT 0566 (or, so you wanted a smaller 0560?)

The 0566 blade length is one half inch shorter than a 560.Closed length is .55 inch shorter than a 0560.So you're looking at about a half inch difference between the two knives. For me that's not much difference in size as I have no problem carrying a 0561.The weight difference is unknown since the 0566 is still listed as a prototype in the catalog.Being as the 0566 has a stainless steel back verses titanium the weight difference imho won't be much as well.I think the biggest overall difference between these two knives is going to be the price.:)

I've read thei before, but it is something I've never understood. I mean, I've seen mercop's video(s) about unassisted being better, because assist could fail to lock open. But I've never had that issue with any of my assisted folders, from several manufacturers, cheap to expensive, foreign or domestic. And ever it did, it just means that you are now in the same situation that mercop would have you starting in. And if it is a fear of a perception of illegality, again, I don't understand. If you are using a knife fir utility that people could construe as being illegal, then you are greatly increasing your chances of someone perceiving it as illegal and causing problems.

Sorry to sidetrack. On topic: the ONLY thing I can find wrong with this knife is that it isn't coming out until Q3. Aauuuuughhhh!

I have never understood that position either. The primary problem with an assisted opener is the possibility that it *won't stay closed* if the torsion bar breaks, not that it won't open. The torsion bar has nothing to do with the lock bar mechanism. And the concern about closing can be dealt with, as it is with the 566 and the Blur, by having a detente hole. That way, the blade will stay closed without the torsion bar and will also have enough resistance to opening to allow the buildup of energy behind the flip that helps ensure it opens all the way without a torsion bar. Moreover, for people who have arthritic flareups the assisted opener is the only way to go.

Totally agree! Can't wait for it to come out!

Hmmmm. No Ti, no buy. :( Even though I prefer the Hinderer design, I'll pick up a Southard instead.

I'm actually looking forward to the stainless steel framelock, as there is essentially zero chance of getting one with a sticky lock.
Sticky locks bug me way more than an extra ounce of weight.

The only conceivable reason I can think of for making the 0566 with a steel handle was a marketing decision on ZT's part to achieve a particular price point. I'm sure ZT met their goals in doing that. But they didn't meet mine. Regardless of the price point, it's Ti or die for me on a Hinderer-designed knife with a ZT trademark. Not even Rick could talk me out of that.
I guess you are not in the 0566 target customer base. C'est la vie.

Perhaps. But that's an increase I'd be willing to accept for what will undoubtedly amount to a weight savings of an ounce or more in favor of the Southard. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the 0566 ends up weighing MORE than an 0560! (PS: Has anyone else noticed that ZT isn't posting weight specs on any of their new knives even though they've been asked repeatedly to do so . . . at least in the case of the 0801? I wonder what's up with that. )

I'm sure Jimmer and Lynda will get right on making sure ZT's goals are more in line with yours.

Sounds like the same scaling down that ZT did from the 0300 to the 0350.

I'm willing to be the number one and number two request customers made in regards to the 0560 was the size and price. I mean beside the obvious, 'I want a full titanium knife hand built in the usa with unobtanium blade steel, weighing less than 4ounces but still being large enough for 'tactical' uses, with jimping over every possible area, be sharp enough from the factory to whittle hair but be strong enough for me to spine whack and baton with all day. Oh and I don't want to pay more the $75 for it. K thanks' crowd.

Lol,maybe the new 2013 Kershaw Scrambler will be just what you're looking for.I don't know about the price yet but it looks nice.:D:thumbup:

I'd pay $250 for a 566 that was a real scaled-down version of the 560, just being realistic. For me at least, the size really is the deciding factor provided all things are the same. If the scaling down really is parallel to the 300/350, the 566 would have been a linerlock, just like the Speedform/Speedform II, Volt/Volt II. I've stopped carrying my 560 in favor of the 550.

So many exciting new non-recurve options! :D

I tend to like steel framelocks just fine, so that doesn't seem like a downside to me. So long as I can de-assist it, this knife sounds pretty sweet.

As would I. A real scaled-down version of the 560 might even give the Southard a run for its money. But not the 566 . . . at least not in my opinion.

Don't be silly. I know you're just joshin' with me. ;) Then again, who knows? The 566 hasn't been released yet and ZT could have a change of heart. I'm aware of at least two customers who'd pony up $250.00 apiece for a Ti version of it. :)

Something I'm not clear about is how the 566 relates to the 550. IIRC the 566 is slightly smaller than the 550. The 560 has a sculpted lock side, the 550 and 566 don't. It seems to me that the 566 is closer to the 550, and the 550 is Ti isn't it?
