[FIRST LOOK] ZT 0566 (or, so you wanted a smaller 0560?)

I'm actually looking forward to the stainless steel framelock, as there is essentially zero chance of getting one with a sticky lock.
Sticky locks bug me way more than an extra ounce of weight.

Well, but the stickiness is actually a feature rather than a bug. The Titanium "galls" which ensures a dependable lock up. It is irritating, though. I have a CRKT Eros that's really bad.

Something I'm not clear about is how the 566 relates to the 550. IIRC the 566 is slightly smaller than the 550. The 560 has a sculpted lock side, the 550 and 566 don't. It seems to me that the 566 is closer to the 550, and the 550 is Ti isn't it?

A smaller 560 = 550-sized titanium framelock with an unassisted flipper and KVT. You bring up a good point about the sculpted Ti though, if we really want to hash out the details. I like titanium, but that's just me.

As I said before, this particular version was never going to be a titanium framelock. It was originally going to be a linerlock, and we thought it would be cooler as a stainless framelock. I think you will be pleasantly surprised when you handle it - particularly when you add in the low pricepoint.

There is always the chance that we could do a 3D machined Ti mini 0560, but it's not on the slate right now. This current product release was focused on making knives that were cool, manufacturable, and economical, with the goal of getting them out quickly while continuing to work on our backlog of high-end projects like 0777, 0888, and 0600.

Also, keep in mind that if we ever did make a 3D machined Ti mini 0560, it would cost just about the same to make as the big knife. Most of the cost is in the machining time, the grinding, the processing of materials etc. The savings on materials is insignificant. Therefore, if this ever became reality, the MSRP would be around $300-$325, and MAP would be no lower that $250. As I said, there are no current plans at this moment.

Good to hear from you Jimmer. Honestly, the 3D Ti makes little difference, to me at least. If the 560 came with a smooth Ti framelock like the 550, I would have been fine with that too. The 550 is already pretty sweet, even without the KVT.

Well I know I'm excited about this knife. One extra ounce of weight means nothing to me but the smaller blade means I'm buying it. Would love Ti too but I'm fine with steel.

Thanks jimmer, really excited about getting this knife, as it is, for me, it looks like the perfect EDC.

Just doing a back of the envelope calculation since Titanium is 45% lighter than steel for the same volume if the 560 were rendered in steel it would weigh 8.2 ounces. The 566 is 87% of the 560 by volume (and weight if in the same materials, steel) so the weight of the 566 will be 7.1 ounces. That assumes the same level of skeletonization, etc...

Well done sir.

Well done sir.

I forgot to mention that I'm assuming half the weight of the 560 is in the handle and half in the blade. Upon reflection that's probably not correct because of the tang. So chances are the ZT 560 would be less than 8.2 ounces and the 566 would be less than 7.1. Someone with some weight scales could make a better estimate.

Pretty good estimate for back of the envelope calculation though.

I like what is said above ..........I,d get both anyway .......LOL
I,d probably get two of the LE version at least , I have 4 of the 0560 ..........when its good , its good.

As much as I long for this knife in titanium (and would gladly pay $250), thank you so much for NOT making this a liner lock. I love the 0350 and its price point, but a framelock in that size has been a missing link for a long time. Jimmer, can we see a side by side picture of the 0566 and the 0350?

Rick Hinderer seemed to think the 566 was coming out in the Summer months in the GoingGear interview.

Still as excited about this knife as I was when I first saw it... I have three knives in the chute prior to this one, but they're all available right now, and then the 0801. C'mon ZT, show us some love!

:::edit::: Pre-ordered. Sigh... my wallet hates you guys right now. :D
