[FIRST LOOK] ZT 0566 (or, so you wanted a smaller 0560?)

Nice knife for sure but not for me. I am sure a lot of people will be all over it

I like the idea of smaller but not necessarily "cheaper" like a smf to a sng. If it had similar 3d machined ti with Elmax and a bearing system with no assist I'd be all over it at 220 ish to the consumer.

Should be a nice blade though at that price

I would like a smaller version of the 561, but I'm not sure how crazy I am about the bearing system. There's a reason most bearing systems in everyday use are sealed nowadays. If this system turns out to be highly robust then it should be in everything. If not, why put it there? Just keep it for knives that will probably never touch dirt. As for titanium, it virtually never corrodes and also it "galls" when surfaced against steel, which makes the frame lock more failsafe... but also makes it "stick" once in awhile. And, again because of the galling, it won't last as long without deforming. So in a heavy use knife the primary advantage is weight. And if the knife is small you can deal with that in other ways.

So I'm fine with this design. I think they've made some good tradeoffs to produce a more affordable tool. I should say that it would be much more desirable if it had the same 3-D machining.

Update: BTW, you can get the 550 now for $170 on Amazon. It's not the newest generation so doesn't have the deep pocket clip, but many don't like that anyway. I'd snap it up, but I really don't much like the fatty blade. I'd rather wait for this one. Waiting builds character. :-)
Update II: Also, I should say that the more I look at the 561 the less it looks like a "big knife." I have very small hands and theoretically should go for smaller knives that fit it better. But there's nothing wrong with the fit of the 561, and a 3.75 inch blade isn't really that big either. Limit in VA is 4 inches so I can carry it, and it's so light I forget it's in my pocket. If I lived in a 3.5 inch area I'd need the smaller knife, but right now I don't.

As somebody who has had and/or handled 20-25 kershaws and zts and only likes the 0560 it's disappointing that the 0566 isn't more like the 0560 is all.

Sweet! I liked the 0566 before but now that I see it in action I like it even more. This will definitely become my new favorite ZT over the 0350.

Kind of let down... they should have made it exactly like the 0560 but shrunk it down. (EI, use machined Titanium and skip the speed safe) , although I don't mind the regular non 3d machined G10.

Hell yes! This is one that I'll have to pre-order. I've got a Cryo that I'm pretty neutral on, the 560 just cost to much for me at the end of the day, and my 0550 is awesome but a bit big for my new desk bound job. This'll be great!

Yes, I love Kershaw/Zero Tolerance. This is exactly what I've been wanting to see from them. Any word on a release date? I'm practically foaming at the mouth here.

Dear lord. Can we drop the "It's not Ti. Waaaa!" thing here? A Stainless lockbar isn't going to break into your house and steal your belongings is it? I'm actually kind of glad they went with SS instead of Ti. Keep it cheaper and keep the wallet happy.

Locking the thread would be the only effective way to stop people from sharing their preferences/opinions on here since they are only welcome to say not much more than "nice knife" on this first look thread.

You prefer SS over Ti to keep your wallet happy or do you prefer it overall? A knife as epic as this shouldn't have any compromise, perhaps some feel that the "affordable ZT" shouldn't be the 566. Just an observation.

I feel that everyone has their entitlement to an opinion. However at the prototype phase I highly doubt they are suddenly going to switch to Ti. Also, in my opinion, titanium is prone to more problems versus steel. Thus it is completely fine with me. It was specifically stated by Kershaw that this blade was a shot at getting an American made ZT into the hands of as many people as possible.

I'd wait until you know the weight before making that your final word. What kind of steel is the handle made from, anyway? Something pretty corrosion resistant? Probably not Elmax, although that would be cool too.

Sorry but I have to add my "Waaaa"... The 566 looks more like a deluxe Cryo than a smaller 560. They should use titanium and loose the spring, I do like the more simplified, less 3d machining, though.

I'm happy with it just as it is. If I wanted something this size with Ti, I would buy the 0550. I like the size, elmax, and I'm fine with steel and assist if it means it's under the price of the 0550.

I like Ti a bit more but not by much. I understand people have different opinions and respect those that wish it was Ti (I did at first) but the "It should be a Ti back and 3d machined" comment kind of ticked me off for some reason. If I want a 3d machined Ti lock side I'll go with the 056x. I really like the fact that they are using Elmax and the Hinderer design on a knife and making it affordable. Adding a Ti lockside would not make it affordable. ZT has come out with a bunch of knives lately that are pretty high in price (Not complaining) And it's nice to see some more affordable models coming out.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone.

You can simply remove the Torsion bar out of the handle cavity to make it manual. It's designed to work both ways.

I think the 056x is the top dog of the Hinderer designs, the cryo is the affordable budget friendly one and the 0566 is right in the middle as a (semi) affordable US made model. I'm really not seeing too much resemblance to the Cryo. I think it looks much more like the 056x than the Cryo but that's just my opinion.

I was highly offended Will :grumpy:.
