First Post Blues...

Well I definitely want/need a user. We camp a lot and knives are almost always needed. I don't mind spending money on a quality knife but it has to be able to take some punishment. None of my knives are showpieces.
I can't comment on either benchmade or spyderco because I don't have either...yet. I'm hoping to use this forum to become Better informed about what's out there.

Die hard "Benchwarmers" will swear by the Benchmade
Spydie fans caught in the web will swear by the Manix

Either one is a huge upgrade from your SOG, so I say go with which one you like (stylistically) more, and then save up (again) for the other one.

Check out a cheap factory blem Blur too... Because its a cheaper blemish (still a solid knife, just maybe discoloration or a small nick) they can be had for almost half price of their standard "going for," sale price (nearly a quarter msrp); would give you another quality steel option you won't mind using (hard) for the price. And add one more to your modest collection. That's what I got for work as to still carry my favorite edc but not bugger up my "good" blurs at the dirty job.

Yeah. Ain't they sexy. :D

Yessir! Can't dispute that! I usually despise partial serrations, but those look downright functional, plus relatively easy to sharpen. Ya done good man. I drool over that one every time you post it!

I like the manix so much I got 2. G-10 FFG S30V and Cruwear versions. Definitely get a cruwear! It's my second favorite EDC behind my CRK Umnumzaan.

Just want to apologize to the mods and members for my first post regarding the value of knives.
I'm in quite a few different forums and should have read some rules first about your forum.

No worries. It happens. Lesson learned. And rather than read some of the rules why not read all of them? I mean you did agree to abide by them ;)

So, are the Manix 2 and/or the Benchmade 707 good edc knives. Are they good representatives of their respective makers?

I'd like to add a couple more pocket knives to my tiny stable of knives. Right now my edc has been a Sog Twitch 2.

Sorry again.

Les

Between those two I would go with the Manix 2 mostly because it is a bigger blade and I like bigger blades. A lot of finding the right type of EDC knives to put in your stable will be finding what you personally like in and EDC blade. For example, I can't go below 3.5". I had to figure that out through trial and error. Now I know to not even consider a knife below 3.5".

If you want to go budget I would look at the Ontario Rat 1 & 2, the Utillitac II, Kershaw Cryo and Thermite.

Step it up to USA made with offerings from Kershaw like the Piston or Knock out. Or some Japanese Spydercos like the Endura or Delica.

Go a step further with some spydercos Like the PM2, Military, Manix and what not.

Benchmade has great offerings as well. The 710 is the larger version of the 707 you own. I love the 810 but it is a beast.

Once you get to a certain price level ZT and the higher end Spydercos coming from Tiawan are worth a look.

Again though, you will need to figure out what you like in an EDC blade. Also, the exchange here on BFC is a great place to find Like new knives at discounted prices. Good Luck!

Benchmade is quality, overpriced quality. Think about what you need to do. Get, as many suggest, the proper tool for the task. Overall, Spyderco is my choice. The quality and innovation is higher than Benchmade; do you want a user or a cult?
Benchmade is in my dollar not worth it for what is paid.

Wow! Hate or fanboy much? Benchmade owners are a cult? Please...

How much for that Police?

How ironic that in a thread where the OP is apologizing for asking about prices you do that very same thing.

The Manix 2 was my first Spyderco.
I now own 5. 2 fixed, 3 folders,

It is a very nice knife and I am not really even a folder guy.
I am sure the Benchmade is equally impressive.

Sorry for being off topic but holy serrations on that digicam military Batman I didn't know Spyderco ever used those type or are they hand made on an original PE?

No worries. It happens. Lesson learned. And rather than read some of the rules why not read all of them? I mean you did agree to abide by them ;)

You can have an opinion about either company. What is that to me? There are countless Benchmades that tempted the purse strings. I see more value in Spyderco. That was rather an asinine comment.

As to your second quip, no that would not be irony, but it is rescinded. I was only half serious....
Kershaw is consistent. That's good, but it seemed the thread was a toss up between the Benchmade and Spyderco offerings.

YES!

Spyderco and Benchmade are quality knife companies. They make something for everyone and none of them are 'bad'.

And any of them are levels above your Twitch. ;)

Calling Benchmade fans a "cult" is just silly. You can have your opinion but if you use inflammatory language to express it, prepare to be called on it.

Oh, so now breaking forum rules is called a quip. Okay bud. Asking for values at your membership level is against the rules for good reason. Buying outside of the exchange is also against the rules. Both are against the rules even if you are half serious. Maybe give the rules here a good read before you break more of them.

And at least the OP had the stomach to admit and apologize for his mistake. You just offer more witty banter. And on that note, I don't really have much else to say to you on this subject. Buy!

Do the major brands have blemished models on their websites or are there specific websites that deal with blemished goods?

Definitely sounds like a solid idea considering that I will be blemishing them myself when I get them. :)

Kershawguy (a well respected bladeforums supporting dealer: http://kershawguy.com/) gets blems from Kershaw and ZT. I don't know about other companies. Do check out the exchange though. Good deals to be had there everyday.

You can have an opinion too....about a COMPANY or a KNIFE...that's what we do here. But, you're insulting Benchmade owners by calling them/us a cult. I personally prefer Spydercos in general but I also own a dozen Benchmades because they're great quality pieces. Just because you cannot justify a price doesn't make those that can CULT members. If you want to insult the people here, expect to be called on it.

ljorges.....I would go with the Manix. But what I have found with knife collecting is you won't be unhappy with the one you're gut is pulling you toward, which ever that one might be.

How about everyone calms down and realizes that they have that one brand or type of knife that they have a cultist devotion to be it Sebenzas or frame-locks and at the end of the day most of us are just grown men collecting knives like some of us did sports cards when we were kids. Also OP if you want a comparison the Manix 2 or Paramilitary 2 from Spyderco and the Griptilian from Benchmade would be the staples of those two companies but the 707 will do the job just fine. Ignore all the people bashing on brands and buy what you like, try it, and if you don't like it get rid of it on the exchange and move on to a new knife. Despite what everyone may scream and gnash there teeth about I can tell you Spyderco, Benchmade, Zero Tolerance, and Emerson all make quality products that they stand behind.

Welcome to the forum. Stick around, its actually a great place :).

For me, I prefer to use a fixed blade as my main camping knife. So, in addition to any folder you're looking at, I'd throw in a Mora. They are cheap ($9-16 or so for the basic models), and are outstanding at camping tasks. I got one early on, and its still one of my most used camping knives.

Good luck :).

Between those two, I would say Manix all the way! Such a great, solid knife with just enough blade for anything and the ergos are spot on.

Oh, calm down! You're getting wound up over inanimate objects and a brand. That is cult like behaviour. Twelve? Pull the beam from your eye, sir. However, if the OP wants the knife the Manix is a value for what he pays. If he wants an Ult Sparc, what does that matter? Cold Steel offers good options also.
However, since most people are not dedicated fanboys with twelve of a certain brand, it is logical to conclude that the OP is on a budget. The dollar for dollar value is for a company not selling a name with the product.

OP, it would be advisable to consider that if you are in Chicago, you are under draconian laws. It is likely not legal to carry the Benchmade, but the Chicago model was built for those laws by Spyderco. This is a valid consideration.

I'm not wound up over any object. LET ME BE CLEAR. I'm offended by your language directed at people! I am a knife collector. Calling people fanboy is the same offensive crap that got me to respond to your cult BS. 12 is nothing. I have well over 40 Spydercos, 16 ZTs and 34 other knives covering 9 more brands. You are talking a bunch of crap to and about people and this is not the place for it. Talk all you want about knives. Stop insulting the members.
