First Post Blues...

OP, it would be advisable to consider that if you are in Chicago, you are under draconian laws. It is likely not legal to carry the Benchmade, but the Chicago model was built for those laws by Spyderco. This is a valid consideration.

Meh, who cares about the law... The law says I can't carry a D/A auto... I still do...

Chicago says I can't carry a 2.5"+ folder, so instead, I'll bring a 4" flipper:)

You are a rebel. Don't let The Man keep you down! :D

The Benchmade 707 has a stronger tip than the Manix 2.

I find the Manix 2 has better ergonomics than the Benchmade 707.

Be aware that the Benchmade 707 has aluminum handles. Some find these slick and uncomfortable. On the other hand some do not like the roughness of textured G10 as you'll get on the Manix 2.

The Manix 2 is also a larger knife. Depending on the size of your hand, you may not be able to achieve a full 5 finger grip on the Benchmade 707.

About 15 years ago my friend was at baseball game in the city and they ended up leaving the game to find a bar. They went in the wrong direction and ended up in a REALLY bad neighborhood. So bad in fact that cops actually stopped my group of friends because they looked out of place for the neighborhood. The cops thought they were trying to buy drugs. My friend got searched and they found a 4" blade folder on him. The cop looked at my friend handed him the knife and said, "you know this is illegal down here right?" My friend said, "No Sir, Sorry about that, I didnt know" The cop got a serious look on his face and gos "Dont be sorry. Around hear you will probably need it" The moral of that story is that I have lived near the city my whole life. And as far as chicago cops go enforcement of contraband seems to be hinged on your other activities. In other words the knife isnt what gets you in trouble. It just gets you in deeper trouble when doing stupid stuff.

That is one officer in the extremes of the ghetto, and one incident. The law is the law. Your companion could have been arrested.

Three of my seven knives are Benchmades, but I'm not offended. The other four are Spyderco. :D

Some comparo/other options. Delica is on the left ($60), Manix in the middle ($85-90), and Paramilitary ($110ish). The Manix is my brother's.

In the collection is a beat up Tasman Salt. Robert Lyons had to repoint it after the tip sheared in use. I like it. The newer handles would be better. One day, perhaps a Delica will become a part of the collection. I had no major complaints on the Salt, which is a third gen handle with an hawkbill blade in H1. It lived in my shower for a time as a shower knife; no rust.
Lot to be said for the hole versus a thumb disc or peg, but that is likely circumstantial.
My apologies for getting caught up in the scuttle.

I carried my Spyderco Police Model in high school.

Shower knife? Lol

I am also curious about this one.

I've heard of running/gym knives, which make "some" sense, but I can't think of a reason I'd need (or even want) a blade in the shower. Personally I'd be worried about the chance of slippage, and cutting of my manly parts .

When I'm fresh out of the shower, and see myself in the mirror, I look pretty sharp...

Does that count?

It depends... Did you do your "manly grooming" with a hawkbill Tasman Salt?!
I can just see it now - "honey, have you seen my Adam's apple?"

Exactly the type of behavior I'd expect from a large, African American construction worker! LOL

You get me, Blues?? ;)

I just assumed our new friend wants to be prepared for a knife fight at any time, including while in the shower.

After several years and various different folders, it spurred a move to fixed blades. I carry one daily, but it is a defensive knife. It does NOT open letters or boxes, prepare food, and like ilk.

This is not a thread for the faint of heart or the squeamish. Applegate, Fairburn, and Sykes discussed well how deep certian artieries (brachial, subclavian, femoral, jugular, and on) rest in the body, how deep must one cut, and the times which must pass to induce unconciousness, then death. ... The question here is not the length of blade, whichcould be as low as three inches on some spots a trained fighter could hit, but what are the capabilities in regard to penetration of a nine-inch blade? I have a local knife maker working on a wharncliffe with a nine inch blade, five inch handle. It intrigues to know how far can nine inches penetrate in flesh.

I keep my Spec Ops Soap-on-a-Rope handy just for that eventuality.

I've considered tying a rope to the end of my D/A auto, so that I can quickly fling it out of my pocket in a twirling motion so that it's easier to shank someone:thumbup::D

(Inside joke)

I do all my manly grooming with a Zweihänder:cool:

They're kind of hard to maneuver in a small confined shower though...

Look up the Spyderco ARK.
http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=921

The ARK—or “Always Ready Knife™—is a purpose-designed personal-defense knife conceived by U.S. Army combat veteran John Shirley and his friend Sam Owens. While deployed to Afghanistan, Shirley learned that an alarming number of U.S. personnel were falling victim to sexual assault, particularly while showering. Drawing from his knowledge of the Japanese martial arts and with the help of Owens’ skills as a craftsman, they developed the ARK as a lightweight self-defense tool that can literally be carried anywhere.

These are good points. I don't like the feel of aluminum scales at all, and they mark up easily. I do have Benchmades that I do like, however, in G10. I have owned several Manix 2's and they are excellent folders.
