Fishin' with your Traditional Knives

This one swallowed the hook and was bleeding pretty bad so I took him and three other smaller fish home for a meal for my wife and I.

Any day fishin' is a good day. This was an exceptionally good day. Mild weather and the catfish were hungry!

How have I never seen this thread before! Chris, the viper is looking good brother, hope all is well.

I'll get some pics in here later.

Great knives and catches everyone

Couldn't help but notice that most of the posts here are from you good folks in the USA. Here's a few of the knives I take on a typical days coarse fishing here on the other side of the pond in old Blighty. By 'coarse' fishing I mean that on fresh water rivers, lakes and canals for everything except trout and salmon.

My main knives (present on every trip) are my SAK Farmer and my small Leatherman. Apart from everything else the Farmer has a great saw, good for clearing the bank and lopping off small branches etc. A while ago I trod on the pole for my landing net and I was able to neatly cut away the damaged area, fit it back together and secure it with a jubilee clip thus saving the day. The Leatherman is great for trimming line and dealing with fine tackle generally. I sometimes take my modified Opinel No. 8, complete with scratch carved perch design on the handle. The other two knives pictured are my Richards fishing knife, of the type we had as kids, and my Normark Big Swede, more suitable for sea fishing and a great robust general purpose knife.

My last photos show a typical set up for the type of fishing discussed, With one float rod, one leger rod and everything else required for a day on the bank. All going well There'll be a nice big net full of silver fish, roach and bream etc, and with any luck some tench or a beautiful mirror carp like the one shown. So, with summer upon us it's time to get out there and start catching. Hope that was of interest. Tight lines old chaps!

Nice Carp Blake, and a fine selection of fishy knives

Blake, that LM Style is my favorite fishing tool! It has to be the most handy one I have. No pics today, but I like to carry a SAK camper, the LM, and a cheaper pocket knife in case of loss. Usually it is also stainless to keep maintenance easy.

No fishing pics yet, but this is a nice Imperial Fish knife I picked up along with a My Buddy tacklebox and a De-Liar scale/tape measure. Cool little gadgets that I will take on my next fishing trip. Great thread and I hope it sticks around.

I like your fishin' setup Blake and especially the fish carved in the knife handle.:thumbup::)

My father used to have a De-Liar just like that - I am going to have to take a look next time I am up at my mom's house. Nice fish knife !:)

Come to Eastern Iowa along the Mississippi River... that's a tiny one. When I was younger I helped a guy get a 65lb+ Buffalo rough fish in that he snagged. Then after 1.5 hrs of chasing the darn thing.. He didn't want it; just his snagging hook back! :o Seriously we gave millions of tons of rough fish in the river. No one here except commercial fisherment net them. You'd have a blast around here with a bobber, and some kernel corn!

You're talking my language ConBon. That LM is the best for fishing and stays right there in the tackle box. I don't know if your camper has the saw, it really is such a great tool to have with you out in the country.

Thank you Primble, I appreciate that. :)

I'd love to mate, really. Things are quite different over here exracr. You can catch carp above 40lb (and over 60 in France), but that's a different kind of fishing known as specimen hunting which involves days and even weeks of sitting and waiting. Personally I like to go out early in the mornig and be home by 6.00 pm and so prefer to catch a weight of smaller fish rather than just one big one. Generally speaking this type of fishing is called 'Match' fishing: that employed in competitions over relatively short periods of time. You may also be interested to know that everything is tightly controlled here and everything caught, except for Salmon and trout, is returned to the water for the good of the species and the sport. Incidentally, I also caught my carp with a float, or bobber, using corn as bait. Thanks for your interest my friend. :)

Great fishing pics, everyone! I haven't done much fishing since we moved out to the desert.
