Fishin' with your Traditional Knives

Blake, great write up and photos. Nice learning what others fish for and the how/where/when/whatnot.

Turk88, I'm the same way about fishing. That's a beautiful secret spot, btw!

Last weekend the river near my cabin was higher than I've ever seen it before. I was able to get to the actual river in only 2 places (normally I'll fish 30 different holes when the river is at normal levels).

It's this flooding that allows the river to team with awesome Browns:

And Steelies:

And of course the annual Salmon run:

For some reason, no matter the season, the 77's seem to often accompany me on the river:

Wow, Macchina, I am jealous. I'm hoping to get into trout fishing more this year. I had my first couple of successful trips last year. There is just something incredibly peaceful about walking a quiet secluded stream.
This is all I have to show for this year so far. Plus another identical bass caught later that night.

I'm pretty sure the 77 was also in my pocket when I caught this one.

Great post Macchina, you've really given us a feel of a day's fishing in your nick of the woods. Wow! 30 different holes, It would be unusual for me to move more than twice in a day. Great fish too, big, healthy, edible and there for the taking. I think that's the big difference between England and America, you still have some very real areas of wilderness where as everything here is long since tamed and managed. I'd have to go to Scotland or Ireland to get some trout/salmon action like that and would have to learn to fish with a fly, a totally different method to what I'm used to. It would be interesting to know more about the methods you use to catch your fish, but that's a whole different forum I suppose. Getting back on track, that's a nice looking knife you carry with you, I expect you use it for gutting and cleaning as much as anything else. It would be great to see some pictures of it being used for that purpose as it's a part of fishing many of us here seldom have the opportunity to practice. Anyway, many thanks.

A couple more examples of two of our native species in England: the bream and the tench.

My gosh...those browns are incredible...I wish we had them here like that. We've got some but they are very hard to find.

Cute little fella...hopefully you'll catch it again in a few years and it will go double digits hehe.

I've caught a few this year...gotta keep practicing for tournaments lol. Here's a couple. All with my Alox Cadet and Case Medium Stockman in my pockets.

Haha yeah, he's not exactly a trophy or anything. I just happened to have a couple hours to kill, so I headed over to a neighborhood pond that I used to fish a ton. It's a heavily fished area. They don't get to large there. Ive probably only caught a small handful over 2 lbs there in all the years I've fished it. Unfortunately I don't hit the bigger lakes as much as I'd like.
I'm envious of all you guys pulling in those 8+ pounders. For the life of me I just can't seem to hook on to them. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Oh and for the obligatory knife content, this higo has cleaned a few trout.

The knife in my avatar is my first choice when fishing.
It's a modified older version of the Fällkniven F2 with 4,5 mm spine and full distaltaper to the tip.

It works very well also for general camp chores, wich means it covers the light duty tasks in the Outdoors.

Finally got some good fishin' in Sunday and today. Caught 7 nice black bass and 1 striper Sunday in a little over two hours. Went back at lunch time today and caught ten black bass in about three hours. I normally catch and release my black bass and was determined to keep some today for pics. The fish and wildlife boys were in close proximity and I was a little unsettled about putting any in the live well, since they made me realize that I had not yet read the 2016 size limits, normally 12 inches. The three below are over 15 inches and I felt comfortable with that. Read the new regulations as soon as I got home and 12 inches still prevails. :o

I carry the SAK Alox minichamp in my watch pocket most of the time, when fishing. Stainless steel, scissors are handy for trimming line, hook degorger is handy, and the two small screwdriver blades are handy for reel plate loosening or tightening. I figure luck was with me for my two first times on the water this year.

Wow! Looks like you had a quite a holiday, Chris!:thumbup:
Catching that many is almost like working, isn't it?? :p

Not all work is laborious, some is even enjoyable. With a full stomach, I have no doubt it was worth the effort envolved.

That's a good day of catching right there Chris. Must have been some full bellies of fried Crappie. :D:thumbup:
Is that fillet knife one of your own?
