Fitness "Spartan" Beckerhead GAW discussion thread.

I'm just gonna pop in, I'm not saying I'm very muscular but this picture was from spending 1-2 hours a day 3-4 times per week

From the looks of things baker, you're doing pretty well :).

And man, if only I had time to lift as much as I did in college. There I lived a 3 minute walk from the gym, and hit it 3-5 times a week for most of the time I was there. Now I would have a 20 minute drive to a gym, which alone is a big barrier to me :(. The 2 month old isn't making it any easier either. And even then, I wasn't a "huge" guy, just averagely strong. Before I got married I tried to see if I could bench twice my wifes weight, and curl her weight. I made it on bench, but wasn't quite there on the preacher curl.

At this point I'm more into keeping healthy, rather than trying to bulk up.

So, I've not been doing perfect at the pushup thing, but I'm still pressing on. I have had to repeat one day at least twice now. The first time through I was having to pause halfway through the 3rd through 5th sets, and didn't even reach the required minimum for the day. I did it again last night, and just barely made it through without having to pause in the "up" position for any of the sets... but it was close. I'll have to decide if I want to try it again, or just move ahead.

My gym rat days are probably over forever (two bad shoulders) but I DID spend the last hour mowing the lawn for the last time this fall. It still worked up a sweat, so I'm calling it exercise.

Funny how life creates new priorities. ;)

ocnLogan, I'm pretty sure having to pause is allowed.

From the FAQ:
"8. Can I pause between push-ups if I begin to tire?

Pausing for a short period of time to regain your composure is allowed, but make sure you rest in the "up" position. Do not lock your elbows, raise your butt or allow your elbows to rest on the ground for assistance."

Go until failure. If that means you rest at the top, that's fine. You'll get faster improvement if you do, and your maxes involve resting, and you literally can't do another one.

Ah, I thought I'd seen that somewhere, just couldn't find it at the moment.

The first day I attempted it I did indeed lock my elbows, and raised my butt... and still couldn't complete it. When I did it last night, I did it "to spec". Although, I haven't been doing much more than the minimum for the final sets, but perhaps I should change that to include rests to go to "absolute" failure. I'm sure I'd improve faster that way.

Thanks :).

I should really start doing the pushup challenge.

tomorrow...

If there are any 'heads out in Northern California, I invite you guys to check out my studio, Strength Dynamics in Pacifica CA. We do a lot of kettlebells, HIIT, plyometrics, and calisthenics. Also do powerlifting as well. Come by, work out, hang out, and we'll talk knives and guns and all things hated by my fellow Californians :P

I've been contemplating this one for a while. On one hand, who doesn't want the chance to win a becker?? On the other hand, I don't want to start something only to quit 5 days later. The deciding factor? Put myself on a scale today and I'm exactly at my heaviest weight I have ever been at. Promised myself I'd never n here again , but apparently I have broken said promise. So, I'm probably at 8-10 pushup atm, and maybe 6 or 7 situps. Sad, I know.
So, without further adeu, I'M IN!

Glad to have you, keroscene. Prizes aren't limited to Beckers either. And, the point isn't to compete with others. It's to compete with yourself, and to try to be better.

Qeth, if I ever make it out to Cali, I'd love to visit your gym. Even if we didn't have the knives, guns, and weightlifting, you also are a Mando fan. Hard to go wrong with that...

Tbh, I'm not banking on winning anything. Like u said, I just want to b better at life and get in better shape doing it. Appreciate the motivation

I feel ya, keroscene. I finally got on the scale the other day and heard a grunt and a muffled "get...off!!" So as to have a baseline that I can kind of be held accountable to, here goes: I'm at 225lbs. (and I am 5'-9"). For perspective, when I was at my lightest (at my final height) I was 180, swimming 6000m a day (six days a week) and also doing an hour of strength training (100's of pushups and situps) each of those six days as well. About 6% body fat, even at that weight. That was 34 years ago. At minimum (maximum?) I'd like to get down to 200, though I realize that will not happen in the next two months. Mostly I'd like to have more stamina for everyday life, not just cycling. I really want to thank crimsonfalcon for providing motivation and a supportive and convivial atmosphere, and I'm rooting for anyone and everyone who gives this a go.....and keeps going, well beyond the end of this thread. I'd also like to invite anyone participating to come on over to the MYB thread and join in there as well....if it keeps you motivated and helps to motivate others, then it's all good - regardless of how little or much you feel you're doing.

Anywho, fired up 'cause I finally rode my bike this evening for the first time in more than a week.....then took a deep breath and did my initial test for the 100 pushups thingy. Surprised myself with 13. Plan on doing the 200situps one tomorrow then try and do one or the other every day.....that's the hope, anyway. Good luck to everyone. And thanks again, cf, for giving me the nudge I really needed.

Yessir, I'm at 220 (6'), and I wanna get to 190. I, too, realize this ain't happening in 2 mos, but getting the start I need to propel me down the right path is most important. Maybe I won't suck at life so much.

Good luck GSOM! Maybe you'll end up being my personal inspiration......or someone to talk a little trash to along the way. All in fun of course. :D

I'm ordering steel today for some of the prizes...

Looking forward to seeing some of y'all achieve some of your fitness goals.

Just started week 1 of the 100 push-ups.....gonna be harder than I thought. Of course, I did ride my bike 35 miles today (always a challenge for the deltoids) and shot about 50 arrows from my (20 year old) compound bow.....should be sleeping quite soundly tonight.

Yesterday I climbed a pole on a playground for the first time in my life. It was short, but I don't care, I can't believe I could do it! I've always had terrible upper body strength. (Although I used my legs too of course) Going to start the pushup challenge this week.

Great job guys and gal! I look forward to seeing your progress. And yeah, climbing poles is a challenging thing to do, even with using legs. I'm pretty sure that's proper technique, anyways.

Getting myself prepared to dive into this.....took a 2 mile jog/walk (mostly walk) with my buddy Becker

Yesterday, I dragged some brush into a pile. Not a whole lot as of late. Today I'll get out and go for a ten plus mile walk.

Just finished Week 1 of the 100 push-ups. I missed the max (at least 13) by 1.....still, 56 push-ups? Didn't think I had it in me (anymore). I'm more than a little afraid to look at Week 2. Thanks again Crimsonfalcon for starting this up and putting the motivation out there.

Glad to hear you finished. Don't forget to do your end of the week max test. How many you get determines which column you'll do for week 2. Getting to be about time. We'll get this going officially in about a week.
