Fixed blades

Yep! We had a few raccoons attack my neighbor’s chihuahua and about killed it. I had to run and grab my .22 and dispatch one of them before the rest ran off. They are fierce little devils that are destructive and will kill your pets and small farm animals.
That's terrible! I'd go bonkers over my dogs! Unfortunately for the coons my dogs play zero games, when I crack that door and yell get em, the coons find the nearest tree lol

And the volunteers are always so strong and healthy.

I shoot coons around here too. I let the possums walk because they eat ticks and we need all the help when it comes to those.
thats a bit of a myth that formed from a poorly done study that concluded it incorrectly. that study has been debunked now. they can eat ticks but don't look for them and don't eat 5000 plus like the bad study thought.

also bad info thats been gloating around for ever is they hunt and eat rats. they can eat a rat but don't really hunt them down and control the population like folks tend to think.

I read that as well, supposedly they pick ticks up as they mosey along though and eat the ticks that get on them which is still helpful

yeah they groom, but don't really go looking for them. theyre kinda scavenger/hunters. they'll eat whatever they run into in their territory. crickets, snails, mouse, trash, etc......doesn't really matter to them. they don't really do much on the ticks. newer study found zero ticks in stomachs of wild ones...so they really do no real control of ticks.......no more than a squirrel does while grooming.

So I should start shooting the possums too then?

Damn. Well, that's less than ideal. Looks like the hefty one that's been sleeping in my trap every night may need an eviction notice.

Damn freeloaders

if they're destructive.......maybe......that's your call.

I'm mad at the fat momma raccoon and youngins that ate bites out of and messed up over 20 pineapples.....but its nature and survival and I'm not growing these to feed myself for survival just for a hobby. im only out cost of water and my time....so I let them be this time. next year I might set traps and remove them.......

Be glad you don't have bears screwing up your corn. My neighbor grows sweet corn, the kind you can take a bite out of raw right from the stalk and it's like sugar. A black bear wandered in, destroyed 2/3 of his corn. Took 1 bite and tossed it, grabbed another. Rolled over the stalks, tore it all to hell. Neighbor came out yelling lol bear stood up and didn't run, got all aggressive. Bad move, old man sent him to the after life.

I haven’t seen the possums do any destruction, but damn them raccoons. They dig for grubs in my yard and leave these unsightly holes in my beautifully manicured yard. I’ll leave the possums. But coons and dillos are destructive and get shot on sight.

I'm sad neighbor lost his crop. bears down here are like big raccoons. they're trash pickers & crop destroyers.....

I'm in bear area. theyve eaten a bunch of my pineapples before. they tend to eat the whole thing minus skin and top. whereas raccoons eat part and leave the rest. very wasteful.

Yep, some get accustomed to the easy pickings and become bold and lose the fear of humans.

Raccoons will do similar to sweet corn. My grandpa used to chain a dog in the center of the patch at night to dissuade them until he discovered that dragging a dead rotten raccoon around the perimeter was a decent deterrent.

Back home in Missoura, the armadillos would destroy your yard looking for grubs

I think I’ve taken care of the armadillo problem. I saw you mention dragging a rotted coon carcass around the perimeter. I used to hunt some leased land way down south in a huge Pecan orchard. The owner had a problem with crows eating all his pecans. I told him to shoot one and hang its carcass from one of his Pecan trees. He did and never had a problem with crows eating his pecans again.

Sometimes the old ways are best 😁
