Fixed blades

Hopefully ok for sharing....
Last week I was approached here asking if I'd help out? The person had a damaged handle and asked for a rehandling. I guess I do That now....?

Kinda weird working on something that's not mine, in any way.
I'm keeping the profile, and edge the same (I don't know anything about the maker, the steel or heat treatment,) just cleaning up as needed. I can't really make suggestions.... without knowing more.

I even straightened it out with the help of my carbide hammer.
It's going to be a Huge improvement.
Old scales were hickory. Mine are walnut and micarta liner material attached the Proper way, including actual fasteners. The previous brass pins just lifted and separated from the tang.

Next week it will be ready.

Very cool of you!

Better than just “OK”. Looks clean, usable and useful 👍. Good job. I need to get off my mountain of excuses and try to make a knife.
Thanks man! It's a lot of fun. Took me a bit to get all the tools I need and every trip to town seems like there's more odds and ends to pickup. But it's fun and gives me something to do on these cold dark winter evenings. My wife said "oh now you can stop buying knives" hahaha yeaaaah right.

Up to you, If you should tell her that it's cheaper buying knives......;)

The hardest part of knife making (aside from actually making the knife) 🤣🤣🤣

-With Your vast library, and everything that has gone through Your hands, I'd say you are way ahead of the curve!
*Id love to see the knives that You come up with.

I've owned several big cleavers from the early 1900's, and a few were similar to that one. I never tested mine, steel wise, but from the sparks, they appeared to be a simple carbon steel like 1070 ish. Took an amazing edge as well. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Nothing, That's Cliffs blade. High polish has lots of scratches from being used. That's when I sent the blade to Jacob. I told him to thrash it. When I got it back, the edge was still sharp enough to easily slice paper, so I left it as is.

I’m talking about the brown coloring. Is that rust?
