FK2

I just got in on the FK2 sale from Friday and didn’t realize I could get the OD micarta scales buffed or unbuffed. Jo sent me a picture that shows the buffed a darker green and mentioned that the unbuffed are grippier. I just wanted to see what you guys prefer between the two?

Define prefer?

For pure form and functionality, the unbuffed version gets my nod but aesthetically, at least to me, the unbuffed OD green micarta looks more grey than green which will actual use will end up looking more brownish in the long run. While the buffed version does not offer the same grippy-ness as its unbuffed version, it is definitely more eye candy if the visuals are more important and you actually want to enjoy the pretty OD green hue.

I hope that this helps.

By prefer, I was wanting to know what finish you generally desire in your CPK knives.

I do like the darker green on the buffed version, but don’t want to sacrifice functionality/grip for aesthetics. I’m guessing the buffed version isn’t “slippery,” just not as grippy as the unbuffed?

Unbuffed provides a more secure Grip:thumbsup:

wright88 wright88 - I have always preferred buffed over unbuffed. Nathan over the years has said he thinks the primary grip in a handle is from the shape and overall ergonomics. Good ergos result in less fatigue and improve your ability to grip in most conditions for the longest period of time. Second to this is the surface texture. I realize this is not your exact question, but bears mentioning. With a CPK you are getting a handle that has more thought put into it than most knives have in their entire design.

Please note - I reserve the right to be wrong if I am misquoting Nathan here. I think this describes his overall feelings on the matter. If I am wrong, please let the public shaming and chastisement begin.

As far as just the surface finish, I like buffed because they look nicer longer and don't stain as much. I prefer that over the extra grippiness afforded by unbuffed material.

There are some knives such as some of the larger choppers that really do benefit from the improved grip from the unbuffed material but I personally prefer buffed on most of my own knives. I like the look I like the feel. That said the field knives I could go either way.

Everybody is going to have their own preference. My preference, coming from a strictly utilitarian standpoint with aesthetics considered not at all (at least where the field knife is concerned), is unbuffed. Don't overthink it too much since you can grab another set from Jo if you decide you prefer one over the other.

Mentally, the buffed micarta gives me the impression that it does not adsorb moisture as well compared to the unbuffed micarta. The surface pore of the buffed micarta is more closed to my naked eyes. Hence, moisture tends to stay on the smooth micarta scale surface more. IMO, the pro is during processing of games, the blood doesn’t get adsorbed into the buffed scales as much as the unbuffed scales. I have not way to prove this scientifically though.

I prefer them with 18k fasteners, makes them look so nice with just about anything.

But is that a satin finish or a mirror polished finish on those gold fasteners, Bob? Now that you bring this up, I’m thinking gold rivets for the kydex and gold thread for the leather. Mike

Oh, and a gold belt buckle! Well, maybe that’s a bit much.

Plus, we can't all roll like Mr. Warenski, errr...., I mean Mr. Betzner.
