Flashlights

Oof, this thread was about to slide to page 2 :o

No pics just yet, but I picked up a Prometheus Alpha Blue-label - just arrived yesterday and as soon as I get some batteries charged up I'll play with it and give you all some thoughts.

First impressions though is it's bigger than I imagined. My fault, I didn't really give a lot of thought to the listed dimensions or put them into perspective relative to something I already had experience with. So, as-is, this will not be a pocket light. I bought a "shorty" body to possibly make it more suitable to pocket carry, but given the relatively large diameter of the head and body (1.2" and 1") we'll see.

The build quality is nice, F/F seems to be commensurate w/ what I'd expect from a "custom" product. I'll post more, plus pics, when it's charged and I have some time to play with it..

On a CS note, I'm a bit annoyed that the shipping notification and enclosed invoice show the shorty as shipped w/ the light but it apparently didn't make it into the box and Jason is off for the holidays. That's ok, it happens, but that he waited until the day before Thanksgiving to ship this and I had purchased it on the 18th and now he's not available until after Christmas is unsat to me.. Oh well, patience has never been my strong suit.. First World problems I guess..

Crazy how some of the custom light makers offer nice lights but questionable "other things". I'm leaving it there...any of you that have e-mailed with the custom makers often mentioned in this thread are likely very aware of what I'm hinting at...

All mostly personable and alright folks, but...

It's why I let the product speak towards my opinion(s).

I just ordered a Fenix PD35. Would love to hear from anybody who has one already. I have read great things about it but don't know anyone that has one.

I carry a PD32 UE. It's close to the 35, I like it for what it cost. Very nice beam, good throw and decent spill. The user interface is not my favorite, I always find myself searching for the side switch to change modes. That is the main thing I dislike, everything else is good.

Despite all the nice and costly lights I've collected and carried over the years, my edc light these days is a CREE I got for less than $5 on Amazon. It's plenty bright at >100 lumens, has 3 light modes, runs on a single AA battery (for a looong time depending on the mode you use), and best of all, it is focusable.

I'll be giving then out as xmas gifts this year.

I received a Quark Tactical AA a few weeks ago to replace my recently deceased Fenix LD10. They are about the same size but I think my Fenix was a bit brighter, even though it claimed to have less lumens then my Quark. I am really pleased with the Quark, especially after installing the deep carry clip they offer.
I also just pulled the trigger on a Polished stainless steel Maratac AA. Kind of an impulse buy but, according to most reviews, it's a decent light. I've even seen it frozen overnight in a chunk if ice and still work.

Anyone have any experience with the Maratac AA?

Stepping it yet again to remind all this is a thread in search of the perfect pocketable illumination tool that is QUALITY, RELIABLE, robust, durable, water and shock proof to withstand abuse of life / work....must put out a bright beam of a true 300 lumen "like" output with no black spots in center of beam, no shadows, odd colors, halos and must be AS SMALL AS PRACTICAL. A rear clicky AND rear rotary control would seal the deal.

It is? I looked back at post #1 and the only real direction provided or question for that matter was:

What lights have you found that work best for a small, powerful, feature-filled device?

There is no perfect light, might as well close this thread...

;)

Thread progressed since post number one...into more of what I typed a couple posts above.

ETA: just because you (and I) don't know the answer to the question is no reason to close the thread.

I really like the Nitecore flashlights, but my top two brands right now that I have the most experience with is the Fenix and Foursevens brand. PD30 for the Fenix has come to be a great medium flashlight and the LD01 for edc. I find that the Preon (Preon 1 specifically) series by Foursevens is my favorite edc as I like the thinness.

If that is the case, take it to CandlePowerForums or some other flashlight forum where its members can cater to your very specific needs for the perfect flashlight, this is a Hinderer forum.

I've got a Nitcore that is not reliable; often when the cell is "dead" so is the light. Gotta beat it against the palm / drop is on the floor and hope it right itself.

I've got a 4-7s tactical that will not respond to reprogramming. It's a lemon in that it's my only 4-7s with an issue like this.

Go ahead...have fun over there. This is a Hinderer forum where so many find this thread useful. If you do not...so be it.

Hey doofus, my suggestion was for you to head over there, not the other way around, I am already a member of certain flashlight forums and I do go there when I have specific flashlight interests. You were the one that declared this thread's only purpose to satisfy your quest to find the perfect flashlight as you define it.

This thread has some usefulness when it was open for all to post flashlight thoughts (although that is getting pretty far from the intended purpose of this forum), it shouldn't ever be to satisfy your specific flashlight interests only and you stated "this is a thread in search of the perfect pocketable illumination tool that is QUALITY, RELIABLE, robust, durable, water and shock proof to withstand abuse of life / work....must put out a bright beam of a true 300 lumen "like" output with no black spots in center of beam, no shadows, odd colors, halos and must be AS SMALL AS PRACTICAL. So to be clear, I don't find you nonsense or demands useful, but I do find the Hinderer forum's to be quite useful and I generally try to be helpful rather than demanding people to find me my perfect flashlight per my requirements within the Hinderer forum.

I stopped reading after the name calling.

I'm simply looking for an answer to a question. The list of wants/wishes is so people can help me. I dont have the answer and look to others for opinions and suggestions.

No worries, you didn't understand it the first time I posted it so repeating it was simply wasting my time. Carry on with expecting people here to serve your very specific flashlight needs in your thread.

I'm not the one who misunderstood. No worries is the best way to proceed from this point on our discussion here.

I'm very open to hearing anything you and others have to contribute to finding a great pocketable single-CR123-type light that meets the majority of my wants/wishes.

Anybody and everybody feel free to post photos of Hinderers with your choice of EDC illumination tool.

This thread can morph from its original intent if that's the will of the majority.

I don't know if you have tried an RCR 16340 in a 4-7's Quark Mini123, but it's outstanding! Super bright, and for its size, the pocketability is more than perfect.
