Folding knife lateral strength tests ?

Given your intent with this knife you need to destroy at least one proto to make sure you have actually achieved what you are hoping to. I still see this as a problem looking for a solution though.....

What exactly were the goals of this design project and what problems were your solving when you sat down to play with this design ?

Man if you could do that with a bubble blowing blade instead of a warncliffe I would pay $20 no problem. Love my Swiss bubble knife but it does have lateral play and it does not lock !

if you don't quit posting that pic im gonna have to order one and im sure the wife wont approve....ive already bought three bubble blowers this month

Just wait until I get my grail bubble sword. Just take her by the hand take her outside let her blow some bubbles the whole world looks and feels better. I believe there is no better stress reliever in existence. When my wife gets mad at me and yes she does a few minutes of bubble blowing and were both much happier ;) And of course you can kick it up a notch get a squirt gun and you can skeet shoot bubbles. Hours and hours of bliss. :D

I could put it in The Exchange for $10 and market it as a bullet proof folder that can take hundreds of pounds of side load....Problem is it might sell and I would have to make another......probably a bad idea.

The bad idea is selling it for $10. Spray paint it green and black, call it a "hard use combat/tactical/utility folder", and charge $250 for it. You wont be able to make them fast enough.

Gentlemen, We are NOT going to troll up this thread with "bubble blowers" and other nonsense.....
If you cannot be constructive one way or another in your replies, do not post. It's as simple as that.

Haze,
I prefer fixed blade knives. I have always thought that folding knives are a compromise(my opinion). All they do is cut(my opinion). Fixed blades can do

much more. My goal for FFK was to design a Folding knife that looked and the capability(strength) of a Full tang fixed blade knife(my favorite). So

then I thought why not get a full tang knife blank off the internet, wire edm it so 2 pieces remain that fit into each other. Then I slapped them together

with a pivot pin, bolster/nut on the right side for support and put an overcenter lock on the other.

Mike do you think your concept is stronger than this, especially when it comes to lateral stress, personally I think this is closer to a fixed blade than your design and this came out in the 80s.

Not only do I believe it's stronger but also way cheaper to make, you could make one with some pretty basic materials and equipment.

I think your argument is no longer valid based on this knife alone.

T. Eldelyi,
I'm familiar with the swing concept.....Revolver, Explorer. I think it is laterally stronger to have some extended tang braced inside handle/liner. I don't

like the appearance of it, but agree that it adds lateral strength.

Omg. No wonder why it's costing you so much for prototypes. Wire EDM for this??????

Is this what your looking for? Knife in the video had been abused, cross grain battoned into the tree, etc etc. Blade broke before the pivot area failed. Locking mechanism still working. Just two pieces of g10.

Benchmade grip, "bounced" on. Rear of the handle broke. Pivot area seems intact.

Dont mean to muddy the waters or anything but thats just after a couple minutes on google. Both knives under (or around) $100.

Whoa, the toughness of that BM Grip surprised me. I didn't think it would be weak but I didn't think you'd be able to flick it open after bouncing on the pivot like that.

154CM is tough/flexible, readily available, and makes a good large knife. If I were making custom fix blades I would use Elmax and Vanadis 4 extra

About the prototypes and destruction tests: Now that you have several prototypes, if you aren't going to destroy one what is their purpose? One for show and tell, I agree. The other just sit there and you can look at them?

Videocam + prototype + force :) Get on with it already!

Use aeb-l or uhb 20l or uhb 716 in your tests :)

If people would quite bumping this up maybe it will go away ?

ev13wt,
The last FFK prototype was just recieved last month......I'm in no hurry to destroy it. 90% of my questions/solutions are done with CAD software simulation. Seeing the stress points in a simulation are more useful at this stage than trying to figure out how/where something breaks in real life. Not to mention it is cheaper. For now... I'm testing wear on mechanism.
