Folding knife lateral strength tests ?

giant1,
No argument here. Folding knifes cut.....that's about it. I keep small stainless folders(hardware store $10) in all our glove compartments. If I need to

carry more then there has to be a reason. What's the most useful .......? Probably a multitool and a fixed blade. If I were pushed to carry a folder in my

pocket it would be a Spyderco Native or Endura.

OK. So if I'm following you, what you are doing with your FFK, apparently, is trying to build a folder that can also chop and pry.

Are you doing it to fill a void in the market? Because I have yet to see anyone in any of your threads say they want what you are attempting to make.

Or are you doing it merely because, as you said a couple posts ago, you think it would be cool. If that's the case why are you going to such lengths to convince everyone here how good your design is?

marcinek,
It may appear so, but if you read thread you will see that I am answering questions put to me. I think it's useful and Cool T be able to carry

fixed blade capability on my hip like a multitool. There's an old saying ..... "If it doesn't matter, then why does it matter ?

Let me get this straight:

You carry and use cheap no-name folders.

If you needed more then that you feel a fixed blade and a multi-tool would be the ticket.

It sounds like you would have to be forced into spending the money on something like a Native or Endura.

Not the resume I'd be looking for when selecting a fellow to design the "Worlds Strongest Folder."

Now maybe I understand your need for a stronger folder then the ones you are used to. :foot:

Big Mike

Whatever you do, hire a PR and marketing person and step away from the keyboard. Get this thing built already and market it like hell to the tacticool crowd.

Choose any darn cool high tech steel from CPM or Böhler, get someone that knows what they are doing with hardening and tempering. Get it HT so it deforms before breaking and sell this thing already.

The longer you wait the faster some Chinaman (No racism intended) will find your design and crank it out by the thousands for 39,95.

Hello Mike,
This is the trifacta of your threads with your strong as a fixed blade folding knife with another 87 posts going around your lateral strength tests that you say need to be done, but won't do because you have paid the insane of $Six LARGE on.

Like I said before in the other threads there are are plenty of knife makers & machinist's in Florida that you could work with to get, say, a 7-9" Bowie style blade with your locking system out of CPM-D2 or S30V would be my choice. Have it heat treated to 57-59RC and take the darn thing out in the woods to beat the #$@$ out of it.

Make a video of this and come back here and post your findings. You can waste money on these CAD simulations till hell freezes and it really won't tell you about the read world.

Unless you have played with this on computer so long that you are afraid to take your new baby to drop him off for his first day of school?

If I sound a little harsh it's cause I have exhausted myself and so have many others through three threads with good solid feedback on making, testing and the lack of relevance on lateral force testing on your FFK, yet you seem to have brought questions that your mind already has the answers to.

Good Luck!

It's starting to remind me of the fantasy hot rods we could build and finally someone built the closest thing they could afford and when the river hit the road they were still sitting at the light, giving every reason they could think of, why they didn't prove they're claims right than.

Then you had the guys who just worked on their car tweaking, tuning and modifying till they were ready to test it out, then these guys would take on anybody just to see how their tweaking worked. Sometimes there get blown off the road and other times they'd beat the snot outta some guy with $5,000 worth of aftermarket bolt ons that he paid some backyard mechanic to install. No matter what though these guys pioneers back then because they weren't afraid to break their cars to learn or prove something worked.

You can't learn what your knife is capable of if you're not willing to use it and if you don't use it, how will you ever learn what it's capable of?

There is also a similar saying, "if it's not an issue, it's not an issue" or "if it's not a problem don't make it into one".......

This has long descended into farce and one really has to wonder if this is actually a long winded ruse of sorts. Best of luck with what ever it is you're trying to do. :)

Honestly, I was going to sleep and had just shut my laptop, but then remembered this new FFK thread and just had to take a peak to see where this one went.

Are you kidding me? All this talk and we now see that your experience with folders is in the realm of $10 hardware store junk?
Look, I am definitely not one to bash on thinking outside the box or trying new things. More power to you for that, but this is all starting to make sense now...

Have to admit, I had similar thoughts when I saw the reply to my comment but decided to let it go at the time. Maybe if FFK just buys a decent folder he will see that all this energy could be better spent on another project??

Though I have to disagree with you when you say "this is all starting to make sense now..." :D

^ Ha! :D Big Mike caught that too...

Makes as much sense as FFK's post #342 in the last thread:

"Laurence,
7 inch tactical blade would work. When it's folded some blade would stick out. Carried tip down in kydex or leather sheath with recces for blade end. Then if you needed to cut twine or rope you pull it out and use only blade protruding from end of handle. Then if you use requirements are more, deploy the full knife"

and then stating in this thread:

Bo T,
I agree, friction/long tang folders should be stronger laterally than current folder design. I did think about modifying that design but decided to pass

because of the tang sticking out substantially when knife is folded.
As I see it....to beef up a folding knife you have to add....420 stainless liners,

widen pivot pin, 440C washers, stainless(or Titanium) bolsters, carbon fib handles(high tensile), 56-58 flexible HT.. The FFK doesn't add alot of reinforcing

layers....it'View attachment 449023s 2 pieces of steel(blade/handle),right bolster and an over-center lock.

 oh my head.

I really cant believe you guys have wasted another 100 posts on this subject. It is just silly - Go make some knives, folks!

DagaOculta,
A long tang sticking out when knife is folded is useless. However a blade that sticks out

slightly when folded is useful. By default it's a large knife(7" blade) and would be carried in a sheath tip

down. It's another variation.

BigMike,
I said if I were pushed to carry a knife it would be a Spyderco Native or Endura. To set the

record straight, I happily spent $ on a Spyderco Native and will probably buy a Pacific salt next.

Do you have any design ideas for a stronger folding knife ?

How can I put this.

If you're going to design outside of the box, you should probably have some idea of what's already inside the box.

All these things you say would need to be done to strengthen a folder have already been done. Plenty of folders on the market with monolithic titanium slabs and bull pivots. If you're trying to advance the state of the art, why not spend a few hundred of your development budget to buy an existing high quality folder, test it to destruction and show us it's failings, then take one of your old prototypes which you say you have, and show how many orders of magnitude stronger it is than the existing art.

If you market it right, being different will be enough. There are plenty of collectors who will buy a product for an interesting mechanism. If you want to market based on technical superiority, you will have to prove it.

Do you even own a knife besides your prototype ? I ask because seems to me you have no clue about what's out there fixed or folders not trying to insult you a Spyderco Native is a fine well made knife. But not exactly known for it's prybar like qualities you seem to be obsessed with.

Actually, look up "bottle opener friction folder." ;)
Okay, I'm done! :D
