For the Love of Wood

Sorry to hear, Mikel. Maybe stabilized wood is the answer for you... should be impervious to the elements and still show nice wood grain. Here's an example (in my pocket right now):

I must say I have considered this very same Benchmade. Looks classy and by no doubts it is a quality knife. I truly have no idea if the wood in my Boker is stabilized or not. I may try to look for it and post a picture. True to be told, the scales seem to be only mechanically attached to the liners... and I wonder if having the wood permanently glued to the liners would add significant strength to the metal-wood combo. Unless the different termal expansion coeff. between the two materials ruins the bond or cracks the wood as well when exposed to severe changes in temp.

Here's a real favorite--my Wilson Combat Extreme Lite Carry in Bohler N690C steel with sweet cocobolo scales in Fox's excellent iteration of WC's starburst grip design. I bought this knife on a family vacation to Barcelona at Ganiveteria Roca--a beautiful old-school cutlery shop in the Placa del Pi. As such, it's a sentimental favorite aside from being a damn fine knife. I'm a big fan of the starburst grips and have WC's CRK StarTac and Les George Eagle as well.

Really nice cocobolo on this one with a subtle dark/light streaking running counter to the starburst milling of the scales.
