Forged In Fire

Well, one of the reprecussions of this show happened to me yesterday. Got a phone call from a fella wanting to order "a chopping knife". We chatted about what he wanted, and I quoted him a price..... his response was "What!? Are you crazy? I saw that show on the History Channel......and I know you can make a knife in less then a day!" The conversation ended shortly there after. Had it not happened to me, I would not have believed it.

Now I guess its just a matter of time until somebody calls up and tells me they have an old prybar or a farrier's rasp that they want me to make them a knife from, and tell me they saw it on TV. :)

The show misses the mark by not doing short profiles of each contestant at the start, showing some of their work and establishing the value of custom knives! IMO.

Regarding the naive caller... I was fortunate to have a true expert (STeven/Kohai) introduce me to knife collecting and educate me over time and establish a clear perception of value. The guy who called you was a schmuck. I do think these kind of newbie calls may be opportunities to educate and potentially create some new quality collectors. (Fingers crossed)

heard through the grapevine that there might be a Canadian version coming...

Hi, I just found forged in fire a month or so ago, great show. I have read some of you criticizing the junk challenges, but which is more challenging, making a knife from a hunk of steel that you know is at lest decent or found items that you may or may not know the quality of the steel. I don't know steel or how to make a knife but I can see the show as challenging. I like the show but you gotta remember it is TV

I posted this in the shop talk a little bit ago sub-forum, but I figure it might be useful to some people here as well.

Hey everybody, I figured I'd share this here as I believe many will appreciate it due to not everybody having access to Cable, Dish, On Demand etc...

So I just happened to come across this Chinese guys youtube channel today who happens to have uploaded every episode of Forged In Fire all the way up to Season 2, episode 2. They are great high quality HD videos, all commercials have been edited out and the only thing that is "different" is that there are Chinese subtitles at the bottom of the screen. Apparently this youtuber adds Chinese subtitles to different History channel shows and uploads them for the Chinese people's viewing pleasure. :D

I'm sure he will continue adding the rest of Season 2's episodes as he finishes adding the subtitles, which I'm guessing takes quite a while to do seeing as episode 2, which aired on Feb 23 2016 was just uploaded 2 days ago on Mar 17 2016. So here is a link to his youtube "uploads" page so you can keep checking back for new episodes or just subscribe to him. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_AoUrxSb8in9q26shJlWmw/videos

Also, since the episodes are scattered about on his uploads page among a lot of other shows, I went ahead and copied the links to each episode and organized each one for fast & easy access below. :) I hope this post is OK with you mods, if not I apologize. :o

Anyway, here ya go:

Yeah I saw the Iron and Fire show too, no results on the web yet, which is typical of History. They are often very behind the eight ball when it comes to coordinating online information and televised premieres. I personally find it odd that they will have two shows of very similar themes competing against each other for ratings...

If you get Kodi you can watch it and much more anytime you want.

At first, I thought the same. But maybe the Iron and Fire show will show more of the artistry of smithing, hopefully being more educational? Versus the Forged in Fire format of being a challenge with contestants.

One can only hope!

I think the spinoffs about smithing are endless, forged in fire has grabbed attention and stirred interest. A show showcasing more in depth work and styles on a variety of goods would be well received, similar to the hand made and how its made type shows.

Got a dumb question, I have been following FIF but couldn't make a knife to save my life. They quench their knives in oil, what is the difference between an oil quench and water thanks Mike

Engineered oil has a specific quench rate depending on the speed needed by the steel. There are different speed oils for different steel types. Water (actually brine) is a very fast quench, but the risk is a cracked blade from the stress in the steel as it goes through phase transformation. The fastest oils match the speed of the brine quench initially, but are slower in the second half of the transformation to minimize broken blades. Many new smiths use heated canola oil, which has a medium to fast quench rate. The engineered oils are expensive, prohibitively so for people just trying out if they like knifemaking.

I've got to say, season 2 isn't nearly as negative as early season 1.
More encouragement and less glee for the fails.

The steel challenges make sense for TV... much like the food show analogy above.

Still want to see them make a true Bowie and run some of Gaucho's (remember him? :) ) tests on the blades.
I think that would be more in the wheelhouse of the competitors rather than having the guy with the 12" forge make a two handed sword... but that's me :)

Well, folks tonight is the time to congratulate ABS MS Burt Foster at becoming the latest Forged in Fire Champion. His work on the show was impeccable from start to finish. They would both cut and kill and were something any collector would enjoy.
