Forged In Fire

was surprised to see who went out in the first 2 challenges, winners sword went through that pig carcass like butter, good start to series 3.

I was shocked by the pig cut. Seemed strange that 3 blades struggled so mightily and one make it super easy. I wonder if he just hit the perfect space in between the vertebrae instead of hitting the spine.

It was awesome watching 4 champs work and I didn't want anyone to go home. I was pulling for Matt though. I've met him a few times and he's a great guy (in sure all the other contestants are too, I just haven't had the pleasure of meeting them).

My 13yo daughter watched with me and the image of chopping off horse legs almost did her in but she didn't flee the room as I expected.

Great episode by a great group of Professionals.....love the camaraderie between all. :)

Can hardly wait to see Jason.... ;)

Great to see a more positive attitude this season.
On the pig cuts...technique...
the 3 fails looked like baseball bat swings. The 1st 2 seemed to hit with the flat of the blade. The winner hit with the edge and drew thru the stroke. To my untrained eye, at least :)

Thats what I saw too, though the blade may have twisted some? Hard to tell from the camera angle!

He seems to be toning down the, Will it Keeel? ;) I also see a more positive attitude overall this year!

It could be that the winning sword was just that good. It easily went where it was supposed to go, with the right balance and feel, edge shape and rigidity. Makes a huge difference in a big 'ol sword.

i think each blade should have had 3 tries at the pig. the cut that didnt go through looks like he slapped it with the side of the blade. same on the leg test. i blame the results on poor trajectory.

It seems like Doug Marcida has difficulty keeping the sword alignment.

In the last Claymore episode, he hit that pig with the swords like he was trying to spank it, not cut it. Nearly a full flat strike with both!

I've got a question for y'all.....what did J. do to his hand? I never did hear but....WOW....it was sure f'd up!

TV isn't real and you shouldn't take it at face value. They could have tried a hundred times and you wouldn't know unless you were there. They could make anyone a winner. There is a reason the participants are hired as actors, so they aren't subject to laws governing fair play in game shows.

We are hired according to the laws governing fair play. There is a lot effort made to ensure that. They do not make winners, and it may surprise you to know that while speech and content are edited, the actual actions that take place are left pretty darn intact...
When I won, and when I lost, I felt each time as if I had done so entirely on my own merits. From what I can see, so did everyone else.

I never claimed otherwise. I wasn't there so I don't know but neither am I naive; more shows are faked than not. So yes it surprises me very much that events were not edited.

Shows awesome, very fun to see people put their skills to work on TV and get a glimpse at what it takes to hand forge a blade. It's a TV show its always going to be edited to what they feel will get best ratings but that doesn't take away from the work the contestants put into their blades. How do you keep the swings consistent every time...hook it up to a machine and press a button...does anyone want to watch that...idk but personally its way more fun/entertaining to see the human aspect. That way things like weight and balance and handle shape really come into play etc Regardless great episode and overall show so far, has really made me want to learn to forge.

They have gotten poorer ratings on the shows where a machine tested the blades. I can see why. And even in one episode where a machine did a test cut, it actually put an unrealistic stress on a tang, arguably creating a failure that would not have occurred in a human hand. It would be hard to create a machine with the same arm/cutting action as a human's arm, and indeed the weapons are created for human use.
