Forum Knife Updates and comments

I just received my knife today and I couldn't be happier. Smooth action, really nice walk and talk. Fit and finish on mine is dare I say superb. I'm unable to feel any transition between the bolster and elk - in fact I can confidently say that it has the best scale to bolster fit of any production knife I own. No issues with gaps in the springs. I'm a fan of the very nice, dark ridged elk.

Here it is with a friend for size comp. I like that it's large but very pocket friendly.

Thank you Sk Blades, Buck, and everyone who contributed to this endeavor! Thank you for making a wonderful and affordable knife!

My two arrived today, shipped Monday, so they were a day earlier than expected. I'll post some pics and detailed comments later this week. For now, I'll say if I saw either of these knives in a dealers case for a hundred dollars, the money would leave a smoke trail traveling from my pocket to his hand. Knowing there were only about 400 made I'd pony up a bit more, if that's what it took to get one in my pocket.

Huge thanks to Stephen, the crew at Buck and the guys here at BF for making this happen.

Very nice knives. Glad you were able to get two.

I see by your Avatar that you're IBEW. I retired from SDG&E in 1996. My Traveler Card.

I’m with LADWP. A loooong way from retirement, but it’s a good gig.

I don’t really know why i bought two knives to be honest. I guess in case I used one to death I’d still have one to commemorate my first year here.

I cleaned mine today in hot soapy water and worked the action of both blades in the water. It was actually very clean before I started. Cut my finger, bandaged it up, and then sprayed WD-40 in the pivots of both blades while working the pivots repeatedly. Lubed both pivots.

The stag has cleaned up very nicely after I got my blood off of it. The blades, however, are only marginally improved in opening action. Both blades snap closed very well, but opening the coping blade is still not smooth. The clip blade is operating fairly well. Neither blade snaps open. Then again, I don’t have a 301 that snaps open, either. I have quite a few.

I am going to wait a few weeks to see if they get any better. If not, it goes to Buck warranty service.

My knife arrived today, and it's a gem. The scales fit perfectly, no gaps whatsoever between any of the parts. One of the scales is knobily, with a fair amount of bark in the recesses. The other scale isn't quite as knobbily. The blades are perfect in every way.

What a nice knife.

Thanks so much to SKBlades and Buck.

Mine came in on Monday so I've had a couple days to get a feel for it. All in all, I love it! I had very high (almost unreasonable) expectations for this knife and it has not disappointed. There is a whole lot to love about this knife for the price and I would have JUMPED on the chance to purchase one even at $100.

Right off the bat, the first thing I noticed is that the fit and finish is phenomenal. There are no gaps in the springs and the scales fit about as flush as is possible. In fact, when I run my fingernail across the eight corners where the scales meet the bolsters, I can only feel the change in surface on one of the corners. No cracks near the pins and the elk has a nice polish to it. I do prefer one side to the other, but that's just the nature of natural scale materials.

The grind on the blade could be a little bit better on the wharncliffe, as there is a very slight curve (we're talking super minor). The grind on the clip point is perfect. In my example the wharncliffe is a bit thick behind the edge, but the clip point looks to be a bit thinner. This is actually PERFECT for my needs as I plan on using the short wharncliffe for tougher tasks like breaking down cardboard, and the longer clip point for food. Both blades came very sharp. Centering is excellent. Pull is about a 5 on the clip point and about a 4.5 on the wharncliffe. Snap could be a lot better but I imagine that will get better once it's broken in/oiled.

I really, REALLY love this knife! Thank you @skblades, Buck, and everyone involved in the making of this knife.

I can't think of many better combinations than "BOS" "CPM-154" and "BLADEFORUMS" all on the same knife.

Don't mind the polish on the bottom left on the knife, I wiped it off after noticing it in the picture, lol.

I just wish my postman was the guy on the little scooter who delivered the Acme products to the Wily Coyote....as soon as he posted his order it turned up.package fir bugs bunny..

You probably know this already, so I am not presuming to enlighten you specifically. But some folks may not realize this, so...

I have now cleaned, oiled, and worked the one I am going to keep. Now both the blades are snapping open quite nicely. The funny thing was I didn't get hardly any of the black stuff coming out of the joints like I am used to seeing, but the knife responded wonderfully non-the-less!

Okay, the one lone NH recipient just got his forum knives! Initial comments are they look amazing! There is some good color on both, not overly fat. The action is good on both knives, with one sheepsfoot being slightly tight on the opening. I'm going to give them a flush with some Birchwood Casey and see what that does to clean up the action. One of the clip blades has a decent amount of side-to-side play, but I don't think I'll need to send it in for a fix. (I know a guy, LOL)

The under-spring issue is a little perplexing. I assume Buck was using the springs it had on hand, and that sheepfoot tang made it sit under flush on the close. To me, that is the only thing I would like to see Buck address if they offer this knife as some kind of regular offering. Other wise, I LOVE how how this knife came out. Try finding this knife with that handle material and blade steel for under $100 anywhere. An outstanding knife at a great price point.

Thank you to Steven at SKBlades for acting as chief cat-herder, you did an amazing job, and to Buck for making this forum knife a reality!

Folks keep mentioning the value for $70. But that's not a fair number since Stephen did a lot of work for free. That's a wholesale number. If that was a SFO, I'd be surprised if the price was under $100. So a fair number for comparison might be $100. At that price, it's still a good value to me.

It doesn't matter. The cost to us was $71.00 plus $7.20 shipping and it was a SFO. No matter how much effort was put in by Stephen the bottom line is the cost of the SFO knife we got was $71.00

Another happy and appreciative member here. I feel like there is a lot of knife here for the price. My example has good closing snap on the clip, great closing snap on the sheepfoot. Neither springs open on their own yet but use may change that. I had hoped for dark and knobby but my example is not unattractive in my eyes. I think it kinda resembles mammoth with its surface fractures and coloring. Just out of curiosity I pulled out my dial calipers and found both blades to be at or under .025 at the point where the edge grinding started. Not sure exactly where everyone was measuring theirs.
I too want to send a big thank you to Stephen and Buck for this years BF knife. I will probably put mine up for sale but only because of financial reasons not because I am unhappy with it.IMG_5469.PNG IMG_5470.PNG
