Forum Knife Updates and comments

Got my two Buck's today. The USPS started them slow - sat in one place from last Friday until Monday afternoon - then they took off like a rocket from Spokane all the way to the shore of the Atlantic Ocean in four days (USPS never updated the tracker once it arrived in Spokane). My #1 knife (pictured below) has moderately textured, well matched elk, and is fairly thin in the centers - this elk has nicely colored scales with good contrast between the textured portion and the slick portion of the elk (my first elk handles, there will be more). The knife has nice walk & talk at about a six on both blades - opening and closing - stronger than what I normally get on Idaho built Buck 300 series pocketknives. The knife is sharp and cuts well. I carried this one tonight to a Christmas Dinner party (had to resist the urge to keep pulling it out). I am very pleased with this knife. Oh, it does have some gap but about equal to several older Case, Buck, and Schrade USA pocketknives I've compared it too. Thanks to the porch members of Blade Forums, SK Blades, and Buck Knife Company for putting this project together and following it to conclusion. OH

My #2 knife has much slicker elk and the handles are about even all the way from front to back - about the same thickness as a Buck 301 with rosewood scales. If I didn't know better I would bet that Buck Knife Co. installed mastodon ivory on this knife. It looks very ancient to me. This one has no gaps at all and slightly milder opening and closing snap (about a five on each blade, the clip being about a 4.5). Again equal to or harder than the recent Buck production knives I've bought or owned - just now starting to work some oil into the joints on this one, I expect it will get a bit snappier soon. I was going to keep one and gift one, but I like them both enough to keep both. Thanks again Porch! OH

eisman eisman How do you plan to 'burn' the Elk slabs? I'm interested thanks.

Old Hunter Old Hunter The polished look on that second example is one of the best I've see, yes Mammoth like but without the cost and problems  Really hope mine is like that, still in San Francisco apparently...;)

Postscript: After letting the Pro-Shot Zero-Friction oil soak into the joints overnight on Buck Knife #2, and working it a bit this morning, it is walking & talking like #1 (about a 6 on each blade as I judge it) - nice positive opening and closing snap with a good "snap" sound when fully opened or closed. I didn't measure blade width behind the edge because in nearly 60 years of using and 40 years of collecting I never have - if I start now it will be one more thing to run me nuts! The edges on both of my knives are sharp, not sure about hair cutting sharp because I don't like running around with patches of my hair missing - but surely sharp enough to cut anything you'd reasonably use a pocketknife to cut. Will, at first I was a bit disappointed - as I wanted some real knarly elk, but as I looked the knife over and handled it more, it dawned on me how much like Mammoth it appeared and it won me over. I liked it more and more - it has become my favorite of the two and is in my pocket now. OH

Just a quick comparison. They both are identical in w&t. The clips in both are a little lazy closing. The f&f goes to the CSC by a little. I'm surprised at how similar they really are especially considering how diverse we are in our likes here on the porch.View attachment 1037545
Yes, they are amazingly similar in general design. I like both.

This is the first non-custom slippie I've picked up in awhile and I'm pleasantly surprised! Everything looks tight and even, with no gaps, and both blades snapped upon the first opening and closing. Both blades were dull but only due to a huge burr on each. Quick and easy to rectify. The scales confirm why I generally avoid elk; they never match on what I get. But, on this forum knife, they are actually so impressively mis-matched that they have their own appeal to me . Looking forward to beating this one up a little.

Thanks to SK and BF for all the effort, nice work!

The mammoth-like appearance of the elk is precisely why I chose a really light stag Case Peanut earlier this year. Generally speaking when I think of elk scales, I think contrasty light and dark. But I like these too.

I'm carrying and using mine every day. I just finished opening and breaking down some cardboard boxes with it. The walk and talk on both blades is now perfect after a little break-in period, cleaning, and lube. No side to side play - the thing feels like a tank. I like everything about this knife. Great texture on the elk, but nice and thin. It has a nice feel to it. It's going to be hard for something else to knock this out of my pocket.

Couldn't be happier!! Well worth the wait. One for me, one for a gift. Good snap on both. A little gap-osis and both need a little sharpening but no nits to pick.
Mega thanks to SK and all involved - WELL DONE!!

So. Who's still in the running for Mr Irrelevant? Looks like I'm not going to see my knives until Monday, unless for some reason the postal service does Sunday delivery tomorrow.

The boxes on my knives each have a sticker that reads "Stockman." With only two blades, this knife isn't really a Stockman, is it?

If this question was addressed earlier in this thread, my apologies.

It was addressed. Someone said it's a two-end serpentine jack, I think, but it's a stockman minus one blade, so I call it a two-blade stockman.

Mine arrived and overall it is quite satisfactory. Decent elk, about what I was expecting. Fit and finish about what I was expecting. Good snap open and closed on both blades. Like others, I wish the edge bevel was not so thick, but I have had other traditional knives (think Queen) that were the same. I gave this the same treatment I gave the thick-edged Queens - convexed back the shoulder on the edge bevel to give it a little better performance.

Many thanks to SK for making this happen!
