Four day hiking trip and no knives allowed?

Forgiveness is easier to get than permission.
Pack at least a multitool.

Several years ago one of my nephews got involved with one of these kind of groups. It has something to do with an intitute (Weslayn or somethng like that) and they're a buch of loonies. This sounds like the exact same thing, they told my nephew not to bring a knife of any kind, no money, watch, cell phone and so on.

They want to get you off isolated in a "retreat" so they can try to bring you over to their way of thinking. Once there, you're on their turf. Totally dependant on them for everything. It's like some sort of demi-religous cult thing. On the first night Mark (my nephew) bailed and hiked out through the woods to a gas station with a phone and called home. My sister (his mother) and I went and got him at the gas station where he was waiting. He had tried to leave that afternoon, but they made it impossable for him with all kinds of reasons he could not leave. They play on a young persons desire not to make waves, go along with the peers (the other suckers who don't have the guts to bail) and not create bad karma.

Marzola, check this thing out REALLY carefully. See if there is any conection to the Way-something institute, and if there is, DON'T GO!

You are a college age young man with a brain of your own. Don't surrender yourself to a bunch of new age cult weirdos who don't want you to think for yourself. At this stage in your life question everything untill you are satisfied. Don't trust anyone or any group that won't treat you as a responsible adult.

And never go in the woods without the ten essentials!

That is really scary and after thinking about it I don't think I would go at all. Call me paranoid but I don't want to be in the middle of nowhere with total strangers that tell me I can't carry anything that would help me get out of that situation, no comms, no compass, no knife, no money, yeah after thinking about it I would pass on this trip.

I went to college at Western Carolina University and they had a very active backpacking club with a lot of cool people and great trips, I'm sure your school has something similar. Chris

IF this is an official university activity, there is a very good chance that you have agreed (contracted) to follow the rules by enrolling at the university.

The fact that the activity is off university grounds is probably irrelevant. In many states, even public school students can be disciplined for off-campus conduct (e.g. gang fights).

Without more facts, neither I nor any here can know the consequences of being found to have violated this silly, dangerous rule.

I would not avail myself of this opportunity if attendance is optional.

If I had to go, and regardless of the possible penalties, I would take a knife and keep it out of sight unless actually and critically needed. Personal safety trumps college attendance.

Are females going to going on this trip? This could be a trip for a shared sleeping bag. I would bring a flask of booze if it is that kind of college camping trip. Bring a knife and a comfortable sleeping pad.

Since they are so PC about it, tell them its not a knife. Instead, its a multi-cultural diversity empowerment tool. In fact, you carry this tool to honor your Indigenous Person heritage. Your great grandfather, Chief Sitting Buck - who lived in harmony with Mother Earth - used a similar tool to defend his native territory from the evil Paleskin invaders.

Seriously, though, I would carry whatever I dang wanted. They'll never know the difference.

Going without the ten essentials, a phone, and cash sounds like a really bad idea. As many others have said pocket a folder and lighter/matches then throw the rest in the bottom of your pack just in case.

If I were about to go on a hiking trip with a group AND I got explicit instructions NOT to pack a knife, I think I'd pack a gun just in case. ;) :D

Take the knife. Keep it out of sight.

LMAO! :D

You should memorize this line and have it ready.

I would bring the SAK and not think twice about having it in my pocket. I'm not saying go flashing it around or anything, but, if it does cause any problems, appologize cordially, and fess to it having been an error, that you didn't realize their restriction and that you brought it since you always have it when you go hiking.

As to the RAT5, I'm not sure if I qould bring it. The SAK should handle anything that may come up on this trip, and a large case knife, would definetely cause more issues if discovered. Also, if the blade is 4" edged or more, carrying it is a FELONY in CT.

These rules came from the Great Hollow Wilderness school, not the college (Connecticut College). If the knife is legal to own in CT, i'm pretty sure the college doesn't care if I carry it.

Also, the list didn't say NOT to bring a compass, fire steel, matches and other essentials. It just didn't say that we should bring them. So there are going to be a lot of under prepared people on this trip.

The more I look at it, the more it seems as though this list was made for children in elementary school and up, and wasn't wasn't made for college age students. I'll have my SAK in my pocket and my RAT 5 somewhere in my pack, probably wrapped in an extra piece of clothing so if someone looks through my pack they wont notice it unless they really look for it. I was talking to my mother about this (who took a while to convince that carrying a knife is a good idea) and she told me that I'm taking a swiss army knife with me. I'm going to be sure to pack the ten essentials and then some for this trip. At least this way i will know that someone will have them.

I would have to approach this 1 of 2 ways.

1.take whatever I would have anyway. So... basically fixed, folder, multi. and just keep it to myself.

2. bring a small backup hidden retarded good. Use this as an excuse to improvise a knife. You very well could be in a survival situation and lose your blade.

1&2 would each involve a quantity of white liquor.

Jack either you have been watching your own show to much or you've been drinking the white liquor, I didn't understand anything you just said.

Bring a retard and make a knife, what?

One SAK I could recomend for the trip (you might want to bring 2-: One stuffed deep in your pack and one hidden on your person) is the Victorinox compact.

It has a main blade, scissors, can opener, tweezers and pen. I carry one for lightweight trips. I would also take a small disposable lighter tucked in the pack.

Also currious about who is supplying the first aid kit?

Well, there you have it.
"My mom told me to take it, and I'm a hell of a alot more afraid of her than I am of you."

If all else fails, "I didn't come to commune with nature, I came to read entrails."

Or you can wear a turban and tell them you're a Sikh and a devout follower of Guru Nanack. Its your religion that you allways have a knife on you. It would be very un-PC for them to not respect your religous beliefs!

If this works you might be able to pack a Busse Badger Attack or FFBM! None of this pussyfooting around!
