free set micarta scales - with a hitch while 30 pair last

Thanks for the comments gents! The knife is going to a customer tomorrow with a horizontal sheath. I'll post the package when the sheath is done. I have 6 more of these that have to be post heat treat ground and have a handle added.

Here's what I ended up with...Better later than sorry :o

First forged blade (spring steel), under the guidance of Robert Mayo. Robert also inspired me for the handle construction (kind of hidden tang?).

I know, it's kinda ugly, but man! is the handle comfortable or what? :D The linen micarta was really easy to work with; buttery smooth.
This little ugly will stay with me, doing kitchen duty. With spring steel, hopefully the wife doesn't forget it wet in the kitchen sink for three days

Thanks a bunch Tracy; not only for the free micarta, but for the fast and accurate shipment

Did you put micarta filings where the tang is, to give a hidden tang appearance? I think it looks good!

Hey Mike!

Here's a WIP picture so I don't confuse myself more in knifemaking terms:

I guess it's a half-hidden tang

You basically dig the tang profile in the micarta scale and you sandwich the whole thing with plenty of epoxy :D

Thanks anyhow :o

Mike,
I believe this is called a "Mortised Tang" If you search and you'll find some threads specifically about this if your interested in learning more on this type of construction. Hope this helps

Damn, I'm slow. Well, here's what I did with my donation from our most gracious micarta benefactor.
This is my second completed knife, my first forged. It started out life as a 1" x 1/4" piece of 1084. Over-all length is 10" with the convexed, tapered blade being 5 1/4". Hamon is brought to us courtesy of my home-built propane forge, some high-temp mortar and McMaster Carr quenchant. Blade is hand-rubbed to 600 grit. Handle pins are 1/4" aluminum. Balance point is just a hair behind the center of the forward pin (a little handle material removal should remedy that if I get the urge). My micarta finish-work needs practice, but I'll get there.
Thanks for the help, Tracy! Couldn't have done it without you.

Mark: That looks great for your first forged knife! (And second knife overall) The work on the handle looks great!

Thanks, Mike! I saw your first and congratulate you on a great knife. Here's a couple more shots...I think I resized the first one a bit small. Hope these are better.
