I have been enjoying your GUIVEUOUE, Âchillepattada Âchillepattada , seeing people's favorite choices!!
This is not an entry, as you have been very generous to me in the past, but I thought I'd post pics of some of my favorites, just to contribute to the list of great knives the French traditions have added to the world of cutlery!Alains gift stag 1.jpgApril JM Gift 5.jpgAurillac Joyeux1.jpgGalvacher plus 1.jpgMarjacq 2.jpgBeluga Nontron 2.jpgRam Lag 1.jpgNontron Oldie 1.jpg

A very thoughtful giveaway, and it's great to see all these beautiful French patterns. I wish I had more knowledge about French knives, and of French cutlery history. I have a few examples of French cutlery, of which this Issard Violon is probably the one I like most.

There is a pattern, the name of which I forget, which is shaped to look like a whale. I rather like that one :)

I kept going back and forth because the reality is, I need another knife like I need another hole in my head, but the pattern you have offered is very intriguing! Thank you for your generosity, along with sharing your vast collection and knowledge with the rest of us here!

I don't really have a favorite...... More like favorite one this week!

There are two patterns that got me completely hooked on French cutlery. The first is the Thiers model, which I initially tried to get a version in Juniper from each manufacturer, although I gave that up.... Too many different ones out there.

The other is the Capucin, the first of which I obtained was actually a Spanish version from Pallares, but they are in the Pyrenees, so I'd say it still counts.

My favorite French pattern is also just one of my favorite knives: Opinel No 08 Inox. Here's a very incomplete list of its virtues:
--It's a full-size pocket knife, but the round handle makes it ride really well in a pocket (and it's as lightweight as a lot of much smaller knives)
--Most pocket knife handles are ergonomic compromises - they are designed to work well, while still being small enough for pocket carry; the Opinel handle shape is so ergonomic that it would be perfectly acceptable on a fixed blade
--The ring lock is brilliantly simple and reliable - it's excellent for keeping the knife shut in your pocket, and if you decide you want to lock it open it is rock solid (often unnecessary but it's nice to have the option available)
--To get a knife comparable in quality to an Opinel you have to spend at least twice as much money - it's ridiculous how inexpensive these are
--It is the gold standard slicer - I have other knives that can match it, but none that can beat it

If somebody wants a knife to pry or dig or be a screwdriver, this is a pretty poor choice. But knives that can survive that sort of thing are usually not very good at being knives (at least not for what I want from a pocket knife). I don't require my knife to be anything other than a really good knife, and this is a really good knife.

I carried my Opinel No 08 daily for a long time, and it's still a pretty regular part of my rotation.

Mon Dieu! I almost missed this one!

I would love to be in for this :) Merci beaucoups!

I don't have a favorite French Pattern, because I have very little experience with French knives. I do plan to buy a Laguiole when I finally make a trip to France. That has been a wish of mine for a long time. But I have never owned a French folding knife.

That said, I do have one French knife. Ma belle-mère bought this knife for my daughter to learn to cook with, and it has been a welcome part of the kitchen knife set ever since. Not the most tradtitional, but hopefully no one will mind.

Are you meaning the Farol cachalot?

There's also this hand made Opi more narwhal shaped. (the bloke made another Opi-based one, less convenable. 🤓)

Not only a super GAW but both Âchillepattada Âchillepattada et Jolipapa Jolipapa deserve mention for raising awareness of the rich seam that is French cutlery, like its cuisine there is so much that is incredible to choose from, it's hard to have a favourite only a CURRENT favourite. At first I was annoyed with this simple Tonneau from Au Sabot, some poor finish but you know what, its character has grown on me and I'm really pleased with this 'chopper' now it's acquired credibility/patina.

Thanks to all who enter, Will

I'm in. While I drool over just about every knife in the French Friday thread, I only have Opinels and a Douk-Douk so far.

The Opinel has to be my favorite. I have several of them and they are stashed in toolboxes and workbenches all around the house. I gave one to my daughter when she went away to art school and she still uses it all the time.

This one I modded while waiting for some glue to dry. The pointy top was bugging me so I smoothed it off.
