French regional knives...

Here's hoping this Laguiole makes it to me sooner rather than later.

Answer me this. When is a leaf a fly? When it's a mouche!

This knife is a Sauveterre, from the village of Sauveterre-en-Rouergue, approximately 85 km southwest of Laguiole. Covers are snakewood. What I find interesting on this knife is the swedge, an uncommon feature on most French offerings.

Hi,

I have seen here a lot of Opinel knives with a modified handle for a better access to the blade .

And that is perfectly understandable because the friction must be hard to protect the fingers but if it's hard the blade can be difficult to open .

Our peasants had found the way for an easy opening preserving their security :

Like this you can keep the handle's shape if it's not for an aesthetical reason .

Here is my newest, a laguiole from Coutellerie du Barry. I've taken some additional pictures for waynorth waynorth .

A lovely knife, but it's not without flaws. One of the liners is proud of the wood at the cap end.

The pins on the shepherd's cross are misaligned.

Perhaps worst of all is the blade's guillochage. It's not as executed as well as it should be. Ornamentation by definition is superfluous and unnecessary. If done it should be done right, otherwise it detracts rather than enhances.

I like this knife, and will be keeping and using it. I don't want people to think otherwise, I just wanted to share my honest thoughts on it in case others want to consider ordering a laguiole from this shop.

At least you got some fantastic looking wood covers! What's the size?

Thanks, I have one from that company I acquired years ago and only recently learned it Was from this shop. This will be a good user. Here is min.16361F97-9E13-455C-8501-354C8E36EE06.jpeg62792651-0B5A-4E9D-810F-E73CC2058D97.jpeg

How do you like your knife?

That's exactly how I'm choosing to look at it Charlie!

since it was a pawn shop find, I kept in storage and never have used it since it was my only example of a Laguiole I could find at The time, never realizing that French cutlery would be available then. I like the strong spring, and the cool African scene, the file work is nice, maybe a little too much of it, but I have not sharpened it yet. Handle is round, not thick, and there are some basic rough touches but still decent fit and finish. Sandvik steel as marked. I found a short article on Antoine Madeiro that was roughly translated for me, I can try and send it to you, PM me and I will try and send it.

It's no precious hotty custom but an honest rough maid of work ;)

Agree to the working knife aspect, and I like the blade shape as it is not typical spear point, but the best part is I like is the juniper wood, pretty and smells like pepper. The other I like is the Yssingeau, I have the olive wood. Both knives are good using knives and the sandvik keeps a decent edge and is easy to sharpen.

I am working on getting a nicer French knife made by a cool maker. Looking forward to it, as I like the shape of some of these French knives. I was looking at a Camembert knife, however the one Gary had with the rough handle edges gave me pause, so I also like the Sanflorain and the Lombard that Fred Z told me about too.

I like the look of this one, especially the with the swedge, but does it look similar to the Aurillac?

Ok, as a divergent from the typical folders we have been enjoying, are there any French regional fixed blades out there? Just curious.

Nice wood. At least you won't be afraid to throw it in your pocket and carry (and use) it. Folks will be suitably impressed when you use it to cut that baguette.
