Anyone have experience with Sorel boots? I found a pair of caribou boots in my size for really cheap.. nothing i would need down here, but almost too good to pass up.. just wondering if they are worth it.
They are fairly popular in my neck of the woods, and I've had a couple of pairs myself. Still have a pair that I don't use anymore, are 25 years old and still have a little life yet...gonna donate them to charity this year. They used to make all their boots in Canada, but went belly up last year and were bought by Columbia. I'd guess that in your part of the country, unless you're prone to really cold feet, they'd be damn near impossible to wear...all the ones I know of are designed for cold climes, thick wool felt and leather. But what do I know? People wear Uggs year round, which I don't get but I've been told that I'm tragically unfashionable. For me, I'd only wear them in the winter, which here means below freezing. Seems like they'd be useless as teats on a hog in Texas. She looks comfy in them, tho:

Is there any estimated release date for the RBK at this point?

Or just vague plans for the future?

I like the looks of these boots but 250 is more than id pay for any shoes. But i can only imagine how comfortable they are. I got my wife some Uggs, well one of my Aussie buddies sent some uggs for me to give my wife for xmas and they are so soft on the inside, and id imagine warm as hell, but i have never in my life paid more than 100 on a pair of shoes, for myself anyway, and prefer to spend around 50 for mine if i can help it.

A Sawyer point one filter turns koolaid to water, so I gotta believe, that if you had no other options for water or fluid you could probably safely use that to filter.... whatever to survive. Their .2 filter actually filters even viruses and such out. SERIOUS filter rated for a million gallons no less.

I have used and owned sawyers a LOT. they are my favorite, you can go back a year and see me speaking about how good those filters are, but still they can not turn salt water to drinkable water and will not make urine safe for extended drinking, please do your own research on the matter, google is your friend.

Yeah, definitely don't need them, just saw a pair, fairly new in my size for $40 and started thinking about it.. they would be usable for about 2 weeks out of the year here, maybe.. but the way the summers have been running here, I may end up in a colder climate in the somewhat near future. Good to know yours have lasted 25 years.. thanks for chiming in.

She does look comfy, but I bet those are some sweaty feet in there, lol

Good to know. Now I have to see if there are any Desalination filters ..lol

Yes there are, we tested one of those as well in one course, i dont remember the name but the main instructor said that one cost over a grand

The sawyers have always been more than enough for me. We had over 20 people using a sawyer for a month and it worked great. I cant recommend those filters enough. No need for replacement filters, just clean it yourself and you can clean enough "fresh, not salted" water for an entire village.

While I'm waiting to see what Ka-Bar comes up/out with, I've been looking at this thing and thinking, "Hell, yeah!" Got a great review from a forum member/knife maker who seemed surprised as hell by the quality and value:
kershaw-camp-14-1076-large.jpg

Near 3/16 thick, 65Mn (1070, I think) carbon steel, removable scales with plenty of tang to make your own if you were so inclined. For about 45 bucks, I'd just get it and beat on it, sharpen and repeat. Decent and fairly well thought out sheath, too. Nuthin' but win.

I have had the kershaw 1076 in my cart for a while. if you get it let us know what you think, the handles were the only thing that held me back really.

I've got an older MSR MiniWorks that is field rebuildable/cleanable and screws right onto a Nalgene (or one of the MSR Dromedary bags). Haven't used it lately, and it won't desalinate water (or urine!) but it worked great when I did. Drop the hose into the scummy puddle and pump away.

I almost bought one of those but a guy on a survival course had one of those and preferred the sawyer the group used, so thats what i went with, i ended up getting the sawyer point1 but it has since been donated to a good cause, but when i go to get another filter i will be getting the sawyer point1 again, its just great for my intended purposes.

here is the basic sawyer squeeze vs MSR

I have the Kershaw Camp 10, Which I think is the one WW was talking about, and for 40 bucks man its damn hard to beat. I have been looking at the camp 14 as well, and it seems to be pretty well reviewed.
On my Camp 10 I modded the handle to take the rear guard WAY down, for comfort, and I also flipped the retention strap which got it out of the way of the edge, and then I smoothed the edge a bit. It really is ALOT of knife for the money.
Derek reviewed one also, and was happy with his too.

Salt is only a couple atoms, hard to filter something that small on the cheap. Else finding freshwater wouldn't be such a global issue...

I have a few reverse osmossis desalinators. They are slow but work. Dont have much need for them in Missouri though.

Probably not until spring, for now I'm just drooling. Probably have more than a few medical bills as well from all this shtuff with my back. For a good review done by a BF member, look here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCF6QHNkfGw. The video is looong, poor quality and bad sound, but the guy makes nice custom knives himself and explains himself very well.

I usually don't mind a little gription in the handle, means you don't have to hold on so tight. Plus, my forearm always gives out before I can get hotspots. I still gotta work on a better solution for my 9 scales; it spins in my hand when I'm chopping. Thinking about trying some horse stall mat or such. Can't put an inner tube on them as the grip is already a little to thick for my small-ish hands. It'll be a custom solution that I'll probably never complete; it always is.
