Outstanding  Dan is one of the very best in the game, both as a maker and a competitor, and he has the Championships and Records to prove it. And Peters' HT is likewise firmly in the top two in their business (quite honestly I think they're Numero Uno), and has been sponsoring cutting events for quite some time. (full disclosure... I don't know Dan personally, I've just interacted with him briefly on the forums, and seen him compete both live and in videos. Peters' does all my HT, but I am not compensated to talk nice about them.)
One thing to consider if you're going to have a second, or practice cutter made, or if you want one for camp use as well as competition, is to ask the maker to leave the edge a little thicker than he normally would for a true race knife. These guys grind 'em
super thin (even by my standards) to get every possible advantage in very specialized events that are measured in seconds, not hours. That sort of edge won't hold up long in a less-refined situation.
The guy I'm working with describes it like this... Top Fuel dragsters are the way to go in sanctioned 1/4 mile events - but you wouldn't want to run a rally or do a road trip in one.
The competition cutting movement is a whole lot of fun, and they've done a
lot to push the boundaries of what serious knives can do. They're also very much into keeping events family-friendly and promoting knives as tools to be respected, not feared. Quite a bit like Beckerheads and their Gatherings
