GEC 2023 #87 English Jack

Some of the camel bone...

So the name would be like "Random camel bone"? :) Some lottery, that's for sure. Gotta see the finished product but even now I'm not sure if I want to play that one.
I think so :)

Wow, bright red, nice!

I don't think I want to receive a cyan or a "stormy night" camel bone, and already got me pretty much red, so it might be first time I'll prefer an acrylic to the bone.

Long post…

While seeing the pictures of those beautiful bone variations is going to be tempting, I am very happy with this churchglass. It definitely doesn’t have quite the depth in the acrylic in comparison to the hummingbirds that have been posted, but it is very nice. Once I have a nice sunny day I’ll see if I can get some better pictures.

On the pattern, my first opinion is… 10/10. I wasn’t sure because of it’s size and the fact that I had just gotten the 65 but this really is an amazing piece. It is obviously still quite a large knife, but a bit lighter than my other usual carries - I get a lot extra blade (larger main) and the additional pen secondary over the 65 for only .3oz more (weights will vary of course depending on materials). It’s nearly a full ounce lighter than my 86. The pen is about the same length as the 86 coping blade (one of my favorite secondaries) and it’s nearly the same length as my 15’s spear blade. This is going to be a great user and I can’t wait to get some patina on this. The ergos are amazing with either blade out.

I can definitely see how some would have an issue with pulling out the clip because there is very little room above the pen blade but I don’t have too much trouble. My main blade is about a 6.5-7 pull and the pen is more like a 5.

All in all the F&F is superb, excellent walk and talk (need to flush the pen some more though), and I honestly cannot find any blade rap! As others have mentioned… these bolsters and end caps… oh my!

That's good news! I don't like when pen blade is much harder to open then main blade, like on the 37s.

For the main blade access problem, maybe it is possible to file down the pen's tang a bit so it would sink down and give more room? Recently I did some tang filing on my 89 Stainless Fruit Knife, because the point got out of the blade well as a result of a couple of sharpening sessions. I was worried that it would make it harder to open if the nail nick sink too low, but it turned out very well. Almost like it was from the factory, but the point is now hidden.

Good review though, man!

Thanks for the comments. Presuming you’re speaking to “dropping the kick” than yes I’d think that would work if really needed. I personally would never do that unless the tip was so proud that it cut me (or my clothes I guess); however if one really can’t access the clip blade because the pen rides ‘high’, that would be the easiest solution - and you wouldn’t have to drop it much either.

Please post a picture of your 37.

A comparison to an early S&M #29 and the 87.
I'm a really big fan of this pattern.

Notice the pen sits behind the clip on the S&M, with its nick on the reverse side. I think I might like the early configuration a touch more than the newer.

Nice knives and great comparison. I actually prefer the pen in front of the clip like old school English jacks. My thumb nail uses the pen as leverage on the long pull of main blade. Here’s a vintage Uitca that has a pretty strong pull where that pen in front comes in handy. To each his own though 😊
