GEC 215124 Farm & Field Bull Buster

How do these differ from the 71 bull nose? Just a little larger?

A little history of the Farm&Field brand!
Bill started out calling these knives Red Neck knives, until he found out another guy was using that name!! Even though he had permission to continue, Bill opted to change to the Farm&Field name, rather than risk future legal wrangles!!
I think he changed from 01 tool steel to 1095 a short time after, by 2015!!!!View attachment 2420490View attachment 2420493View attachment 2420494
Thank you very much, Charlie! Heard of it, but never seen the actual knife stamped "Red Neck". Wonder why they moved from O1 steel? Was it in some way difficult to work with?

As an adult, when I did some research on the term as it related to striking coal miners, I realized it wasn’t quite a much of an insult. Almost a badge.
You've mentioned an iteresting piece of history, thank you. I always thought that word redneck originally meant a countryside worker, like a farmer, who's spending all of his day outdoors, often looking down on something they work on, who's neck is hence got red under the sun.

Have red one underway. Already have a black and OD one's from past releases Very useful knife.
Be sure to post some pictures upon arrival. ;)

I do think that was the original meaning. I know working on my grandparents’ farm as a kid, I had a lot of red necks from the sun! Was basically the factory setting. I didn’t learn about the miner part until fairly recently when researching unions/strikes.

Most traces of the name Red Neck have been removed from GEC's website, and relatively few were made! I don't know why Bill stopped using "01" steel??
Anyone who knows about the difference between 01 and 1095 please comment!!

Being as technical as possible 😉.. 01 has more stuff in it for different carbides that provide better edge retention (wear resistance).

In my limited experience with 01, it has been great for a utility fixed blade but honestly I don't think under normal conditions a pocket knife user would really notice a difference. Perhaps just when sharpening or the frequency of sharpening. It takes me longer to sharpen 01 on a stone. The fancy sharpening machine guys probably wouldn't even notice a difference I'd think.... With those diamond rods and stuff.

Well, it's called "tool steel" for a reason, so your very technical analysis, (ahem) speaks volumes!!😁

I'm excited about that orange derlin! How does one even get one of these? GEC seems next to impossible to purchase?
Best bet will be on here a few days after release for $40-60 more than retail. Several have asked but most don’t share their source haha. Most of the GEC retailers have loyal lists of guys that have been buying every release for 10-15 years and there isn’t room for us normies haha

I suppose 2nd hand on the exchange.

The reason most people here ignore those questions is because discussing purchasing is against the forum/subforum rules:

We want the forum to focus upon the discussion of traditional knives...not the purchasing process, prices nor vendors and their websites.

As for “sources,” the list of dealers is on GEC’s site.

Also, I’d be willing to bet that the guys who have been buying GEC knives for 10+ years make up a very small percentage of the people buying them today. There weren’t that many buyers back then, which was why knives were fairly easy to obtain, despite lower production numbers.
