GEC 25s - Gots 'em?

...and the subtle change in the spear main;

I'm looking at where the long pull starts and stops, I believe that's the difference Sarah.
.... and coolio takes it by a nose!....

I of course see it now....

Thanks!

The earlier long pulls on the NF 2008 run all the way up to the ricasso, as does the swedge, and are very close to the spine. The later 2009+ ones are positioned further from the spine and stop shy of the ricasso. They do, the '09s and up, have deeper cut swedges ground into them too.

I find them both very pleasing to the eye. I love how GEC mix it up like this sometimes. Personally, I prefer a nail nick. Aesthetically the long pulls are fantastic but I find their positioning on most of GECs offerings (not just the 25s) are not particularly conducive to ease of opening, while their nail nicks tend to be closer to the sweet spot as it were.

Absolutely! I submit similar sentiments every time the preference query arises. I admire the look of long pulls, but oooh la, a deep-seated, well-placed nail nick wins out in actual use-- which then increases my affection for how it looks as well.

Goodness I need to get out more....

Maybe, maybe not. In the meantime, I love discussions like these, the shared fruits of clicking and clacking and contemplating (not just 'ccumulating).

I finally get to post my first 25! It's also my first GEC acrylic! On top of that it's an easy open with a single blade sheepsfoot. I purchased this on the exchange. It arrived today. The shimmering depth in the cover is remarkable. Thanks, RDaneel!

That copper snake acrylic is lovely! Am I right in thinking its unserialised? Only four were made without serial numbers, so you have a rare one if that's the case :)

Thank you! This one is serialized. The hot spot on the bolster obscures the number.

I felt like showing this GEC 25 EZ Open in Amber Bone with a new friend - Matti Koski Pocket Puukko in Reindeer antler and Cutrlybirch. Same size, same attitude, birds of a feather.....

I thought that this could do with being moved here, I hope Dadpool doesn't mind...

A Cripple Creek 2009 special order.

I don't mind at all! I wasn't sure I could post it here since it's a Cripple Creek.

Comment withdrawn.
While I've never seen a GEC with a match striker pull, I suppose it is possible that the Cripple Creek knife was made by GEC, though it sure looks like a Rough Rider to me.

Just a magnificent picture, Will!! Man...I sure love the pocket puukko!!!!

The Cripple Creek is indeed a 25 pattern SFO made by GEC for SMKW, as they now have the rights to the CC brand.
I believe they all were made with 420HC stainless blades.

There are some GECs with match strike pulls. Though there wasn't a #25 in the run, the "Bradford Cutlery" SFO (for SMKW) had match strike long pulls, at least on the #23 and #73 variants.

Oh, very nice. I'd just read your description elsewhere, that your new Pocko Pooko is roughly same length as a GEC #25, and am pleased to find the above picture here. Thanks! ... That's one small fixed blade. I like it.

As you've discovered (and described), most acrylic needs to be seen first-hand to fully appreciate its dimensional, light-catching beauty. You've captured a lot in the picture above (nicely done); I can only imagine how good this knife must look in person!

Interestingly enough, GEC has used matchstriker pulls on other contract knives,* and as far as I am aware only on contract knives-- although my knowledge will no doubt swiftly be "augmented" if I'm wrong about the latter. :D GEC's Bulldog and Schrade knives also feature matchstrike nicks, although the Bulldogs on the #25 frame already featured in this thread invariably sport nick-less sheepsfoot blades.

*Knives produced for other business entities, sold under the respective company's name/trademark outside of GEC's own distribution channels),

They made my Scharade Fire and Ice trappers, with match striker pulls. They are GEC made.

Good to know. I tend to be suspicious of any knife brand owned by that particular retailer. The same retailer which owns RR.

Yup! Those were the knives I was specifically thinking of when I mentioned Schrade above. They are the size (and share the frames) of GEC's #73 and #23 respectively, yes?

The 2011 released primitive bone #23s and #73s had match strike long pulls under the Northfield brand.

See? My knowledge was instantly augmented, as predicted. :D (Thanks, Jeff.)

Understandably so....

NOW, where were we?

Oh, yes:

I never could decide whether I preferred the triple threaded bolster as above, or the UN-X-LD stamped ones. Both terrific, thanks Sarah!
