GEC 25s - Gots 'em?

My newest addition! It has definitely moved into my Top 5. (I am showing the pile side as I prefer it.)

Wowzer Bowzer-- that's a stunner!

Is the Abalone within/under pericrylic, and/or does one need to take special care to not scritch it up mercilessly?

Knice! I'm kind of a nut for MOP and Abalone myself.

Oh, my!

The latest with its shield mate;

I really like the looks of the Brown Bomber, including its pile side, the 'feathering' on which reminds me of the back of my Apple Jack and blue Camel, respectively:

I missed out on a Northwoods Bullet jack last Saturday. (I still don't have one)

Someone wanted it more than I did, and paid quite handsomely for it in the process.

The green one that's still on the 'bay has cracked scales and has been "fluffed and buffed". (sellers words)

I wonder if they have any realization whatsoever that they pretty much killed that knife by doing that?

Any Northwoods character it had got polished away...

Of all my hunting for 25s, and I've had some good catches over the years, I've never landed a bulldog or a northwoods.

As far as no Northwoods for the zealots? I'm sorry I didn't realize that-- and know someone else who is very glad I did not. :eek: :D

The #25 Bullet Jack was the first in KSF's revamped Northwoods line, and I love its rustic heartiness and especially the stamped blade (if less enthused about using the thick saber grind-- no potato slicer, this!). A shame, for true, if and when anyone sands away its distinctives....

I always love seeing your stag beauties. Thanks!

CollectorKnives posed a question on Facebook asking what covers people would want on a single spear #25 Barlow today...

Mixed feelings! I am thrilled that GEC continues to produce #25s at all, let alone with relative frequency, but am ready to see something other than the single sheepsfoot and/or spear blades of recent (and, it would seem, upcoming) runs.

However, the big exciting word in the CK query is, of course, Barlow. Ho, HO! o_O

... In the midst of all the excitement, let me add a gentle but earnest reminder to please, please (Oh, Please) do not let this thread descend into what Collector Knives (or any other selling entity) might be up to, who's getting what, where, and when, or "How?!", or even tip close enough that Frank or Gary need to show up in Red. Thanks! :cool:

Boo, Hiss, for collapsed quoting. :mad:

Sarah, I agree it would be nice to keep at least one GEC thread clear of the "when did it come out where do I send my money???!!!" aspect. Just thinking..;)

It's actually what's known as "LVS", which stands for "Laminated Veneer Sheet". It's a sturdier way (and more economical) of using a material like Abalone for covers. Solid Abalone can be a bit fragile, and while beautiful, it does lack some of the "fire" attainable with LVS.

Not to mention that, with all the picking and choosing, and subsequent polishing, finding Abalone shell of sufficient thickness for covers can be a bit challenging. Unlike MOP, which can be rather thick to begin with, and usually is one solid piece.

I can try to get a edge shot of the covers to illustrate the composition later.

But it is "solid" Abalone, as it were, with no acrylic used unlike the "looking glass" covers.

I've carried my Abalones without any dentrimental effects. And you know I carry my knives.

And I second the request to keep the CK speculation to a minimum in this thread...

More likely there is a planned run of spears coming up and he's considering an add-on SFO. In that case i doubt he could specify a different blade.

I don't know...I'm thinking of the run of 74s late last year, where all of the Stallions had clip blades, but DLT ran their SFO with a drop point.
At any rate, if a run of 25s is upcoming, I'm excited about it!

I have wondered what the L/G meant in an abalone description. So, in Looking Glass handles is the abalone stabilized with acrylic somehow? Or is it "sheeted" in acrylic like micarta?

"Looking Glass" will be a (very) thin piece of whatever the particular cover is with a piece of clear acrylic over it.

LVS is actually more like plywood, it's very thin sheets of the material pressed together without the use of any acrylic covering.

I'll get some shots later...

Thanks Kirk. They made them with and without eo notches, interesting. You have some nice examples.

So I had to go home at lunch and meet a 12-8, but that's another thread...

While I was there, I took a few shots to illustrate the difference between "looking glass" and "LVS".

I only have one looking glass 25, a "Birthday Cake", actually the only looking glass knife I own, period.

Here with the Bulldog EO Abalone LVS;

Straight on the heads, the construction of the LG is fairly apparent, the LVS, not quite so much;

DSC03575_zpswi6bavtj.jpg

Added a little light to try to pick up the layers of the LVS;

DSC03576_zpsh5eaquub.jpg

So, LG is one thin layer capped with clear acrylic, LVS has many layers of Abalone veneer sheets.

LG = single layer with some depth, LVS = many layers. Like ogres...

20 years ago Case called it Genuine Abalone, as did other factories. But I don't think I have ever seen a knife slab cut directly from an abalone shell - no flat sections large enough.

I have, but they're very few and far between, with a commensurate price...
