GEC #35 Churchill Thread

I sincerely wish you better luck than I've had with the Ebony. My Calf Roper was a bit of a disappointment and I bought a GEC years ago in Ebony that was the same way. More brown than black. For this reason, I've given up on ordering Ebony handled knives sight unseen.

It's a good looking slab of wood as long as I can get past the fact that it's supposed to be black.

Ebony comes in several colors. GEC "Gabon Ebony" is typically black, but may have a few dark brown streaks or be mainly a dark brown. I have a GEC #15 Huckleberry Boy's Knife in Ebony Wood that is pretty much a chestnut brown with a very dark brown black grain pattern. There is another variety called black and white ebony that I had a pen made from. I wish that GEC would use it.

Christine answered my emailed inquiry about the brown ebony. She said the greyish tan ebony was Macassar Ebony. The Wikipedia article about it is very interesting. Love the wood handles.

I'm sure you are both right. Somehow I came to assume that when purchasing a Gabon Ebony knife sight unseen, my chances of getting a jet black one were pretty good. I still believe that's true but having gotten two Gabon Ebony knives that were mostly brown instead of black, I won't be making that assumption any more.

I do like the wood on my pictured Calf Roper above. It looks good and has a very nice feel. It just isn't what I had hoped for.

Not that big of a deal. I will just make sure I can see both sides of the actual knife I'm purchasing from here on out which is what I should have done after the first occurrence.

Railsplitter , I've had the same exact issues ! I love the jet black ebony and was somewhat disappointed with the two examples I received . They weren't even remotely black . One was suppose to be ebony and the other African Blackwood and both came very light brown . I will not buy sight unseen now .

I have an Ebony knife arriving today according to the tracking but it isn't a GEC. The seller provided pretty clear photos of both sides of the knife so I think I'll be good to go with this one.

I needed something to pacify me while I await the release and arrival of my Yellow Rose Churchill. I'll post some pics in the "Your newest addition" thread if I can get some good snapshots on this rainy day.

Here is my "53 Churchill" (post-mod) that I mentioned earlier in this thread. I ended up with this knife on a fluke, but it's become a favorite.

Just received my maroon micarta.

It’s absolutely perfect. It’s my first 35 frame, and I love the size. It’s hefty without being bulky in your pocket. The fact that it’s a clip/sheepsfoot combo makes this knife a total homerun. I’ll post pictures in a little.

Boy, am I on the fence - like the cougar claw sides (unlike any Case that I collect), single spring & sheepsfoot configuration ALOT. I see it's available online for under $100 ... seems like a great deal for a new GEC pattern offering. I see one in my future ... any downside from those who already have theirs ?

I have a Gabon Ebony and love the pattern. It has two useful blades, is nice sized slim carry, and no etch, which I am a fan of. I see no down side and if I have one complaint ( not really a complaint ) it is that I wish it was a bit bigger, I am in love with the TK cuban which is on the slightly larger 53 pattern. I carried it every day this week and I like to swap my carry knives.

Did anybody reading this opt for the Green Banana instead of the Yellow Rose? I stuck with Yellow Rose myself.

I hope it isn't taboo to post pics of another forum's SFO but what is the deal with the difference in shield positions?

I like the color of the jigged bone though and I REALLY like the centered shield, had it not been a different forum knife, I would of surely picked one up.

Yeah, I'm curious about the different shield placements too. I can't imagine a logical reason for it other than to give buyers their choice. Seems like most would choose the centered shield though.

I wonder if the tang stamp will replace the blade etch this year. Either way, I'm getting one. I think it's the best looking 35 of the bunch so far and being the only jigged bone option on this run, I would regret not getting one.
