GEC #35 Churchill Thread

Can anyone confirm whether there is a catch bit on the latest run of 35s?

Stags starting to show up more widely. So far not all that impressed with the selection.
But they resolve the un-centered vs. centered shield debate by having none!
I saw some I wasn't that wild about, but did find one I couldn't resist at KSF.

I have been trying to wait for my acrylic but finally couldn't stand it! After all, will they do stag Churchills in this configuration again? I kinda doubt it.

I've looked all over for a source on the banana bone knives - if someone would be kind enough to point me in the right direction via a PM, I'd appreciate it!

It was interesting to see the name of the acrylic one evolve. Started as "jungle acrylic" (IIRC in some pre-order emails or early production scheds) went to "new green acrylic" and then it settled on "hummingbird."

I was initially envisioning the camo like we saw on some #18 Coyotes (which I was hoping for, and still wish would re-emerge on something).
Then I started to picture the "Krypotonite" Kirinite (which I would have been ok with).
But once I saw initial photos and it landed on hummingbird, I was out. Apt description though, I guess .

The Saga of my Cougar Clawed Bone: 5 days to get here from US. 3 days in Customs. SENT BACK to US no reason. Returns here. Customs then inform me via snail mail about the import tax I have to pay. Paid on-line Thursday afternoon. No knife Friday, w-end, no knife Monday...check tracking, they claim they attempted delivery twice, impossible somebody here all day. Go to P.O. this morning collect it myself:rolleyes:

Was the wait worth it?? Absolutely! I'm not usually a fan of bigger knives , although I like their appearance. This is a broad framed knife with thick bone scales, I like the look very much and I like the way it carries- the power of single-spring. When I first heard about the knife, I had no interest, then I saw the Cougar Claw and changed mind fundamentally. The blade combo is really useful, if you were to be on one of those mythical, one knife scenarios you wouldn't feel shorted by this one. Decent thin ground large Clip and a very nice Sheepfoot. The knife has no gaps anywhere, no play, the pins are all nicely domed-not sunk, the bone is actually pretty close to Queen's Winterbottom from years back and that's a compliment. Deep grooves which go under the bolster, a nice touch. The bone has attractive look and feel to it and GEC radius the bone excellently these days. Some years back they made knives that had the scales not well ground or radiused with the liners, leaving a roughish feel-no longer. Cleanly cut spring ends. How about the W&T?
At first, a lot of rag, compound and oil in the joints (muck ends). A through wash&brush up with toothbrush and soap worked wonders, a bit of WD40 and drying and the action is smooth and pleasing. I far prefer knives with no half-stop and single-springs offer it. Both blades give a good strong snap sound-I have an echo room at home to try them out in:D the minor Sheepfoot is louder but the Master is good too, very nice action as I said.Zero blade rub is another impressive aspect. I looked at the Stag available at my dealer but it did nothing for me, this Cougar Claw has much more character than ho-hum Stag, but I do look forward to seeing some decent examples here soon.

Finally, could be Knife of the Year for me, at least of the ones I've bought:thumbsup:. A big surprise and a very gratifying one at that. I don't have spare cash for an Acrylic Northfield but that would make a very fine knife too, my choice at least, perhaps rather less user-orientated though? I got in a very rubbish picture due to the eternal night closing in here but I wanted to include something for now. Do I have any criticisms about this knife? Not about the way it's made or how it looks and feels in the hand, no. I have to say though, I'm not really very impressed by the name, they could do better-but then, GEC do have a penchant for odd or puzzling names:D

Those are some nice deep grooves on your example, a lot of character to those covers.
I honestly found the clawed bone a bit lackluster from the stock photos, but once I got mine I was smitten by them. They are already taking on a satin finish from pocket carry (with my keys) and looking even better.
Given given tight space on this pattern the lack of blade rub is impressive isn't it!?

Nice report, Will. I have two coming, one supposedly tomorrow, the cougar clawed just like yours. I picked up a stag as well, decent, but not as good as most of the past offerings. Maybe really good stag is getting quite scarce, especially in the larger slabs. Pics, of course, when they land.

It makes me wonder what sort of selection the 43’s will have.

I did find some nice stag from some of the smaller retailers.

Green Banana bone ordered finally! I'm looking forward to getting it because it's a little brighter than my normal knives.
