GEC #35 Churchill Thread

Will Power Will Power

It just occurred to me that it was named Churchill for a reason, but it just hit me.

Cigar pattern single spring clip versions.
53 pattern TK Cuban (as in habano stogie)
68 Pattern White Owl (cigar brand)
35 Pattern Churchill is a cigar size/style

My mind was just blown. Great connection, it went right over my head!

You're very likely right:D
I don't know so much about Cigars (pipes were my thing) but I might've preferred 'Robusto' :Dor even 'Colorado' as it's a wrapper, sounds American and the Cougar Claws look a bit like a Colorado beetle with those stripes:eek::cool: The whole frame has something almost scarab beetle like about it!

Regards, Will

Winston Churchill had a round bald head similar to the bolsters. I believe GEC named another pattern the Eisenhower, perhaps for the same reason. A great sense of humor is needed to name a mostly black handle a Hummingbird, which I just ordered from CK. Happy days are here again!

In defense of the Cougar Claws, until my Cougar Claw arrived I thought the same as you. But having it in hand, I have found the contrast between the natural color bone and the burnt bone is a hande that is striking.

This one just came today. First impressions: F&F is good, good snap, pull is just about right for me, nice size & blade styles. It's going to be a user.

In my quest to find a satisfactory stag, I ended up with 3 en route!
Oh well, I'm sure the 2 I cast off will find good second homes.

I've had to do this a couple of times. For me, when stag is good, nothing is better, but when it's not, I just don't take to the knife. Further, I can't ever really explain "what" makes it good. I have to get it in hand to know.

That micarta looks a lot better in your photos than it does in dealer photos. Got me thinking.

IMG_0112.JPG just got these in... both of them are from the "culled" batch from collector knives. I am really pleased with the f&f and easy pull (5?). What a good time to be into knives!

Stag on these suit me quite well! I like the "swayed in", quite distinctive and beautiful imo

Only thing wrong with those is that they were included in the culled batch in the first place! Good looking knives.

Going to have to correct you here: the 'Eisenhower' was a CASE knife, small single-spring Penknife that the former President liked and gave as gifts. Some examples have a facsimile of his signature etched on the Master blade.

I think the Churchill naming IS rather more likely to refer to the type of Cigar he may have chomped on rather than his head:D And as it's an American knife, American places, figures or fauna are more apt- Churchill was English. If the cigar analogy holds true and American names are called for the you could call it Marx :D or maybe cooler, 'Clint' :D

But I take your point about the humour aspect of GEC's naming... Hummingbird Green might refer to the greenish black hue of some of them but then, Carrion Crows have a similar tint:eek: I think they should've stuck with 'New Green' actually:)

there are streaks of red in the acrylic too, which, imho matches the name quite nicely

Just got my two Churchills in today, and am VERY pleased. I think I got first choice of Mike's culls in the stag, and selected one with even thickness and nice color. The cougar clawed is sweet as well, but I think the stag will be the user of the two. Pics to compare them:

And some more of just the stag.

I wasn't to enthusiastic about these early on, being more of a jack configuration kind of guy, but the clip and sheepfoot combo is perfect for a two-blade knife, and I'm a sucker for burnt jigged bone. I'm glad I changed my mind. The stag is a little sluggish on closing, needs a cleaning, but the pulls on both are right at 5-6 and the F&F are top notch. The pins are nice and rounded, and about as flush with the covers as is possible with textured stag. If you don't already have one of these . . . JUMP NOW !!
