GEC #68 Pony Jack

Barry,
thank you for your picture :)
How do you find the "opening dynamics" on this knife? from your picture, it seems that the spear nick is as hidden as in the #15.
Pictures of the clip versions are welcome as well :)

I'd say that mechanically, the #15 and the #68 are about the same. It's a little tight to squeeze my thumbnail into the end of the long nail nick, but not really a problem. Springs are about the same as the 15, being strong but not too stiff to open easily, but the 68 has no half-stops. F & F are flawless for a knife in this price range and it's very solidly built. Should last a couple o' lifetimes! :)

Thanks, Barry!

Remaining photograph requests, for your and/or whomever else ends up with the knives in question: the Pony Jack next to a #66 Jack, and also a White Owl-- with top-down pictures included. O'course, a top-down comparison with a #15 wouldn't hurt. ;)

Here ya go Sarah!

Barry, that Dead Skunk White Owl looks excellent. Is it Spear or Clip master?

Regards, Will

Barry,
thank you for your answer. I will wait for someone to post some feedback on the clip version though

Well, I had to see what all the fuss was about, didn't I??
Reason #241 to buy a knife!:D

Pretty good fuss! The equal end knife is an old pattern. It predates the serpentine knives like Texas Jacks and Stockmen. It is generally easy on the pocket, and comfortable to hold and use. Make it as a simple Jack, and it is a good basic pocket knife. Dress it in nicely dyed Peachseed jigged bone, and it becomes even more desirable.

A Spear blade has a nice harmony with the shape, and I like a Spear main, so this knife suits me just right.

Did I say I like this knife a lot? I do! It appeals to the basic knife person in me.
I am so used to my Barlow with it's half-stop, the first time I opened the main blade, I almost threw the knife, it was so startling without that pause. But it is really a natural, smooth motion now that I am used to it, and have run a little oil through it to get the "whatever it is" cleaned out. It's gonna sit on my desk for a while, so I can enjoy that wonderful bone, but I am getting the itch to carry it around! Maybe soon . . . . . . .

Nice knife! I got to play with the ebony clip version the other day and I can't wait to slip one in my pocket! Hopefully they'll still be easy to find when I am ready.

Another instant old knife, right out of the box tube. Your scan shows it off to good effect.

Sarah, sometimes a scan looks pretty good, considering the limits scanning has.
This Bone takes on an older look, if it is buffed a little, as the highlites that come up are similar to the ones created by pocket wear. I've buffed others, shameless tinkerer that I am, but this one is right out of the tube!
The more I see of this jig and dye, the more I like it!!:)
As long as it isn't flying through the air!!

Nice one, jwren! The clip version has a different character!

Don't know if this will kick the White Owl out of my pocket, but these are sweet!

Beautiful photograph!

Maybe it can kick the White Owl at least as far as the rock, to join the Pony Jack for an overhead picture? I'm interested in seeing the knives' comparative thicknesses.

(Thanks. :))

For those who have both the Pony and the White Owl...Can you comment on the differences? Weight? Blade thickness? Tradeoff of two springs vs one? The White Owl is one of my favorite knives, but I really like the idea of these jacks...Just don't know if I would carry one over the Owl.

Which one do you think you ordered this time?

LOL. Good one, P....I had to read it twice. :D I'm sure Woodrow is triple checking each new order after THAT episode. I keep telling myself I'm gonna pass on these Pony Jacks but it's becoming more difficult each day, especially with all the "enablers" posting great pics!

Thanks for sharing, Charlie! This knife looks like a keeper to me, and I can't wait for mine to arrive. I have the same one coming to me.

Great shot jwren! Could you by any chance show us a photo of your Pony Jack fully opened? I would normally prefer this pattern with a spear main, but I think the clips on these look prefect.

I'm going to have to pick up a clip version of this as well. The Antique Yellow Jigged Bone clip Pony Jack looks almost just like my grandfather's Ulster Jack pictured in the first post of this thread. The only thing the Pony Jack is missing are grooves in the bolsters/end caps. Perhaps this might happen with a Northfield version (we can only hope).
