GEC #68 Pony Jack

While I really like the idea of this pattern, I can't see it replacing my White Owl. Still, looking forward to seeing the ebony versions.

Yeah me either. It is a wonderful pattern, one I have always though beautiful, but I can't see putting the owl aside for it as an EDC. Not sure you pick up anything functionality wise but you'd have extra weight and thickness.

I wish they would have put this antique yellow on the owl in the first place though. Wow is it gorgeous!

I'll be curious to see if the blades are thicker on the Pony Jack, especially the mains. If nothing else, they won't need to be 'stepped down' as the White Owl's are.

The White Owl's strengths include its slim presentation in pocket and hand, plus the (relatively) softer pulls that to me add to its elegance. At the same time, I can see how others would prefer a more straight-forward Jack with a wider handle to grip and potentially sturdier blades-- either instead or as a complementary piece with its own strengths.

I look forward to seeing and reading comparisons between the two. :)

Good points. The blades might be a smidge longer too. (Scientific term, smidge)

The old jack has ALWAYS been my favorite pattern. From the time I could tell one knife from another I just thought the two blade jack was king. But the owl is so nice of a compromise between thin and functional. Plus I already have the 76 jack that I've carried the majority of the time since my wedding... couldn't imagine putting that one in the drawer the way it is aging so nicely!

But one will probably find its way into my collection. This looks like one that is just unusual enough and eye catching enough to warrant being my newest purchase.

One of these in Rust Red, would be very welcome, in my humble collection of jackknives, this #68 Pony Jack, is just too straightforward not to garner my attention, I really like the handles, and that's funny, seeing as not too long ago, I was commenting how much I liked my #56's dogleg handles and felt a great deal of preference towards them. I'm going to aim and get one of these sooner or later. I'm a sucker for this Rust Red, and Jackknives in general.

Does anyone have a comparison picture of a 68 frame and a 15? These look like larger boys jacks but I have no reference to confirm that.

I believe one in rust red is going to follow me home.

I think there about the same, 68 is 3.5" and the boy's knife is to, I have a TC barlow next to a 68, hope it helps

edit: except for the fact that the 68 is a single spring so it's slimmer, the "pony jack" has two springs so it's probably very similar.

Unfortunately I was caught a little short and wasn't able to get all the Pony jacks I'd like but have managed to order a ebony clip version, which is nice :) I'm alwasy stuck between the spear and clip blades on GEC, i seem to get more use out of the clip but the spear looks so damn good.

Here are some pictures I took for Rockgolfer a short time ago of a single-spring #68 (the White Owl) next to a Boy's Knife. Hopefully they will give you some frame (heh) of reference. :)

He was primarily interested in blade comparisons, but you can see the overall shape in the first picture especially. The #68 is a smidge shorter, with of course the equal end(s) instead of the widening non-pivot end of the #15.

(I remain interested in a comparison of the Pony Jacks' blades with those of the White Owls....)

Perfect. I really like the 15 pattern and it looks like the 68 jack will be very similar.

Now do I want the clip or spear? That is the question.

A word to the wise. The 68 Pony Jack with Spear Main Blade is a run of only 25 pieces in each handle material. Many folks, including some Distributors, will be shut out.

They look great. I can't keep up with GEC though and on this one I'll just have to pass. My white owl is a Northfields which comes with a bail. I don't know if the bail is the reason why, but I've never been completely satisfied with it.

I wondered about that. I tend to like the spears as they usually look a little more "Old Timey" on a pattern like this, but to be honest, I'm thinking the execution of the Clip looks better on this knife.

Well, this is my kind of pattern. 2 bladed jack with a clip main. Just pulled the trigger on my order with Mike, Antique Yellow. It will be my first GEC knife!

Personally, I dislike knives with bails, they get in the way, interfere with handling at times and scratch stuff up. The Tidioute White Owls are big faves of mine, so too the stainless, Acorn shield version.

The Antique Yellow on this pattern looks very comely, but I would like a shield so I think I'll pass. No worries as GEC is bound to have other knives in the pipeline that I will find disturbingly necessary......:D:cool:

I think I must agree. I was messing with my white owl today and notice that I tend to use the pen blade an awful lot. I reckon this is because the bail-less end is so comfy sitting back in my palm, whereas the bail is not.

I will definitely be picking up at least one or two of the 68 Pony Jacks! This is basically the GEC version of my grandfather's old equal end Ulster Jack posted in the 1st post of this thread. The clip blade on this pattern looks fantastic to me.

Here is the 68 Pony Jack alongside the 15 Boy's Knife; thought you might be interested. The 68 is just a skosh smaller and lighter by about 3 grams.

Thanks, Barry!

Remaining photograph requests, for your and/or whomever else ends up with the knives in question: the Pony Jack next to a #66 Jack, and also a White Owl-- with top-down pictures included. O'course, a top-down comparison with a #15 wouldn't hurt. ;)

Barry,
thank you for your picture :)
How do you find the "opening dynamics" on this knife? from your picture, it seems that the spear nick is as hidden as in the #15.
Pictures of the clip versions are welcome as well :)

Great looking pattern..thanks for the comparison. I'd love to see a single blade #68. How's the spring tension? I prefer mine on the weaker side.
