GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

Thanks, Erik. You're in for a real treat!

Thanks, Harry. I know you must be looking forward to getting home and getting your hands on your new 77s. I'm looking forward to your pictures and thoughts on this run of 77 Barlows.

Al : We are in the Yellowstone for 3 more days , and then probably 3 or 4 more days to get home. They are being held at the Post Office now , and as soon as I can , I will post some pictures. I see no pictures or postings that make be believe that I will not be happy with my new ones.

Cory,

That was an excellent write-up. I agree that this is an outstanding collaboration. I can already tell it's The One. I've always liked the Barlow pattern, but since I've been carrying the 77 for the past 7+ months my admiration for the pattern has grown to the point that all others are on the bench. I do also carry a second knife (usually either the Peanut, my 33 or an SAK), but this Barlow owns the right front pocket. This spear/coping combo is my dream pairing.

This spear/coping combo is my dream pairing.

I'm right there with you. I had this combo for the first half of the year, carrying my Remington R-4 scout, and never once felt that I was using the wrong knife for the job.

I've carried a spear main blade for most of my life, starting with my very first knife. It's extraordinarily versatile, and not too delicate. It handles pretty close to every knife task required of me, both urban and outdoors.

And the jobs that a spear doesn't do well, when a very straight edge is required, the coping blade performs with great precision.

We got lucky that GEC managed to perfectly execute that spear and coping blades on this run. The spear is long and strong, has a beautiful swedge , and a nice long pull. The coping blade almost seems sheepsfoot or lambsfoot like, and is nice and long also. It's the best coping blade I've ever seen. We got a full length liner to keep the two blades from rubbing together, and the blades just happen to center perfectly. We really got the best of all worlds.

Not the best photo, but I love how the Black and Red CK pocket slip is perfectly matched for the red sawcut.

The pull is starting to loosen up a bit. I added a drop of Tuf-Glide and it helped. Took it from a solid 8 to 7. This is the first GEC I've gotten new that does not need sharpening out-of-box. Very nice job all around on this one. Mike spec'd a good one here, and GEC delivered!

Glad you all enjoyed the writeup. A knife like this one deserves some reflection.

Hope all is well with you and yours.

Everything is fantastic. After a couple years of waiting for the right time we're moving into a larger house next month. It's long overdue, but circumstances dictated that we stayed put until just recently. Thanks for inquiring.

If you want I can make a quick run down there and ensure that you're knives are properly looked after. :p ;)

Cory - Glad to hear good news my friend. Congrats on the new home.

Carried this one today

No pics, but I received my Ivory bone, Autumn bone and African Blackwood, on Tuesday. Each one is exquisite. GEC did a great job on this run of SFO's. Mike should be pleased.

I agree completely on the quality and effort on this run between Mike and GEC. I couldn't be happier with mine.

Joker that stag is awesome!!

I wonder if there are sambaar stag ranches in India that sell the sheds. Maybe I should start a stag farm? Mmmm, anyhow, I totally agree with everyone else. GEC seems to have great stag on knives, but your SFO's Mike have been top notch. I love the nearly kernals especially when you can get a lot of gnarly figure in a slim profile to fit the lines of the knife. I'd love a stag sheepsfoot. I hope there's another run of sheepsfoot.
