GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

For those of you that have the newest run in both autumn bone and micarta, which would you pick if you could only have one??

I fought with this question long and hard, but finally kept the autumn bone for its unique color characteristics. The micarta on this run is fabulous too, especially with that checkered texture, but I have a similar one in #47.

Yea I like how the bone is so unique but this will be my first GEC knife so I don't have anything to compare it to.. I have wanted several, 15, 92, 73... but this latest run of 77 might just be my favorite! I just hope when I finally find someone who is willing to sell that they don't jack the price up too much..

I prefer the autumn bone for the depth and uniqueness. I also love the warm color tones of the autumn bone. That being said, the micarta also makes for a very attractive knife.

That is a very attractive knife- how does the other side look? Does the coloration match up nicely? If I went the Autumn Bone route I would just worry about the slabs not matching at all which would drive me crazy. I know GEC does a good job of trying to match them up for the most part.

Yea I understand that, I just mean I've seen a few pop up on here in the exchange where one side is overall much darker than the other.. I also can't decide if I like the polished bolster of the autumn bone or the brushed bolster of the micarta better! Too many details! Haha, if only it was feasible to purchase both and then I wouldn't have to worry so much. I'm making this way harder than it should be...

They will not match 100%, color variations is what makes them more attractive (and you can drool for hours at the pictures in this thread). ;-)

I see why you opted to keep the autumn bone!!! You got an amazing one! Beautiful knife

Another vote for Canvas Micarta...
Between the Washington Jack, the Harness Jack, the Forum Knife & this Barlow I spread myself thin.
I was only able to pick up a single knife out of this run of Yankee Barlows - the 2 blade micarta was first pick, hands down.

Don't forget, these have steel bolsters so they will age and patina nicely. you can always do your own brush finish:)

I could only choose one for myself from this run. It was no contest. You can find bone knives all over the place. If you don't like the color, you can dye them yourself to a color that suits you.

But canvas Micarta on a traditional is a much more rare find. Especially natural canvas Micarta. And the Micarta looks sooooooo good on a barlow.

I love both! However, I personally like the darker variety of AB that some have shown. The one I received was lighter/brighter in color, so I traded it for a micarta. If I can find a darker version of the AB I would snap it up in a sec... I honestly believe that you can't go wrong with either.

Thanks everyone for your input- I think I will stick with my initial attraction for now and look to get a micarta one. I will hopefully be able to add some nice pictures to this thread too! You all have some outstanding shots of these knives that really showcase the beauty of them- well done!

Those are my two favorites as well. Had I not sat out this run, I would have gotten both: an autumn gold spear to go with my autumn gold clip from the previous run, and a natural canvas micarta for its simple elegance.

Wow that's real nice looking Barlow. Awesome pic!

Man this thread is killing me. I had 2 in my hands, bought a different one and sold my two within 18 hours. Now I'm back playing the waiting game for arrival of the 2 Blade Blackwood and I'm hunting a 2B Micarta. Worst part is the seller used first class from the other side of the country and the tracking never picked up. It's like I'm living in the dark ages!
