GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

Congrats to you my friend for finally getting one to your door . That is a nice Rose color , as many of the other ones shown are . I was expecting more of a purple tint in it . IMO I think those Elderberries came out pretty nice .

Harry
Thanks Harry! ;) I'm pleased with this one. I wasn't sure I would ever get another 77 Barlow, but I got lucky. :)

All of these look great!

I’m curious if anyone is going to attempt to dye the camel bone covers... I’m pretty happy with mine but would be interested to see what people come up with!

I'm thinking about it. I like the color, but it's very bright. I wonder if a tea bath would mellow it out a little.

Buzzbait Buzzbait and Half/Stop Half/Stop ...Thanks for the nice comments gentlemen!!! Agree with you Ron that the natural linen micarta is not too bad in the looks department:) The elderberry is really awesome too, my personal favorite of the two...my example is fairly dark and has superb walk and talk.

Thinking about stripping mine and dying denim blue (if I don't trade it). Someone go first and report back what not to do! lol

You all are showing off some tremendous knives! Personally, I think the Ironwood is the show stopper but this one is my first love... It will likely get carried the most.

Seeing all these wonderful barlows has already got me thinking about the next run (too soon??).
With all the discussion of "TC barlows" on the porch (and beyond), one topic that rarely comes up is the fact that GEC's "Tidioute Cutlery barlow" seems to cross the line between Tidioute and Northfield trim with a fluidity not seen in any other model. This begs the question...is a "Northfield barlow" with a standard nail nick and no swedge (what we traditionally perceive as "Tidioute trim") a possibility?

I guess there are at least three levels to this question.

--Would GEC allow it?
--Would knifeswapper knifeswapper allow/want it?
--Would consumers like it?

(the third, of course, would be moot if either of the first two was a "no.")

If I'm reading this correctly, you're asking if a nail nick and no swedge could be used on a NF barlow? I personally think it's way to early to think about it - lol you asked. Would GEC allow it - yes, why not. Would Mike allow/want it - probably not judging from his prior SFO's but the only person that knows is Mike. Would consumers like it - not this one.

I keep looking at the first pages of this thread, and seeing those marvelous clip/wharncliffe two-blade barlows, and thinking that next year would be a great time to run them again.

Had to wait two years for this run. Hopefully we see a run next year.

I'm thinking that potassium permanganate would add some very nice brown to the bone. Works wonders on stag.

Here's a before and after from my stag knife:

That looks wonderful.
I've never worked with potassium permanganate, and I'm feeling pretty cautious about using chemicals on such a nice knife as this Barlow, so I'll likely start with a tea soak first. (if I decide to do anything) Besides, I already have some in the kitchen.

I have to agree with you on the Showstopper being the Desert Ironwood , but I am admittedly biased in my opinion .
I also would have been pretty happy to have gotten one like you are showing in your very nice photo above . It would have fit right in place with some of my other Red Sawcut 77's .
I also commend you for selling your least like new 77 at a Non - Flipper Price . WELL DONE young man . You made somebody very happy I am sure .

Harry
