GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

Fresh out of the tube factory oil and all
Couldn’t be more impressed , blades centered what a beautiful knife !!
Outstanding walk and talk on main Blade with secondary being a little lazy. But I can tell it will break in nicely
Very very happy to add this one to my collection:)

Two of these beauties did not turn out quite as Mike envisioned. Which two?
Bonus points if you can remember what Mike was originally shooting for.

Didn’t the two Blade Autumn Gold turn out much darker then expected, he wanted lighter, but everyone ended up loving it?

Buzzbait's polished sawcut reminded me of this green one I picked up on the exchange.

This is my favourite spring green sawcut. I've seen it once before and remember thinking, "Man, I wished I had that one to hand". Great photos and thanks for posting. One of a kind 77. Best regards. MJ.

Seems to me that Mike wanted a different color of Red and I know that the one on the Right came out wrong but was actually great .

I was happy to get any version of this run of Barlows, but I admit to being somewhat disappointed at not getting one in Desert Ironwood. I had to do some wheelin' & dealin' and gave up my beautiful Copperhead single from 2016 (I really liked it, but never carried it. When I'd want to carry a #77 single blade, I would use the 2014 Stag Jack Forum Knife, and the poor Barlow stayed minty fresh in the tube. So I traded it for this beauty:

Now that I have a nice somber wood version, I can appreciate the frivolous Elderberry. I don't know if I'll carry it as is, try to darken it with a tea bath, or keep it until I trade it for the next new shiny toy. The Ironwood is going in my pocket now!

It doesn't have the fabulous grain that I see in some pictures, but the sides are very nicely matched with diagonal stripes that come alive in the sunlight.

I think that looks fantastic, r8shell. So happy you could land one. My Ironwood is among the not so flashy, but I don't think I would trade it for any other. I do love how nicely matched your covers are though.

I was out of town this weekend and was supposed to get my held mail today, which included a 2016 spring green sawcut that I traded my 2018 blood red sawcut for, but, alas, the mailman decided he preferred to hold my mail a bit longer and I didn’t have time to grab it from the PO before it closed. Hopefully he decides to bring all the mail tomorrow so I can enjoy a single blade barlow that was my original barlow fancy.

I know what you mean Josh. I hate to wish my life away but is it Thursday yet? I gotta Ironwood inbound and I'm dying to see what all the fuss is about.

My ironwood is not the flashiest example either but I love it just the same!

And the pink elderberry had to go, so I dyed it and turned it..... into a user lol. I was going for a deep blue but got black/purple instead. Nothing a quick re-cover in some nice bone or wood won’t cure if I decide I don’t like it. ;)

Wow, you snagged them all, nicely done! That new bone dye job makes it look like ebony!

I feel you. I didn’t win a single 77 in the lottery, but have been wheeling and dealing my life away this last week or so. I had to give up a couple of those single clips from the last 77 run, but they were only living in their tubes anyway. It’s the two-blade variant that I truly love. But I’ve managed to make a deal for everything but the elderberry, which I’m honestly not too big on anyway. My ironwood should arrive in a couple days.

Seeing that the 77’s are one of the 4 or 5 GEC patterns that I truly adore, I’m getting what I can while the trading is still rampant. I think a lot of people received them from the lottery, and we’re kind of shocked by the thickness and weight of the two-blade model. It’s a pretty hefty and solid knife.

The thickness and heft were positives for me, but I just can't get used to the feeling of the extra blade on my fingers. I lowered the kick on my Churchill to get that sheepsfoot out of the way a bit more, and the secondary on this run of 77s is quite proud. I think I'll like the single blade better when it arrives, despite being a slimmer and lighter knife; and I'm more fond of green than red (oddity though that may be).

That sharp corner on the secondary tang is a bit irksome. I’ve thought about rounding it off a hair. But other than that, the secondary works well for me. My extra-long fingers need the extra width in order to get a good grip.

And the green was a great color on the last run. I have a couple of green GEC’s and they’re awesome. Maybe not as traditional as red, but very pretty.

Green just happens to be my favorite color, so it was an easy choice for me. I had a 23 sarpnt for awhile that had really awesome dark green and excellent jigging. I just wasn’t into the blade shape or size of that knife.

Wow I am really liking the grain on that one !!

I am super happy that folks are landing the knives they want in trades. I am very pleased with the two that I hung onto with no regrets regarding the other two variants.

I am rather surprised that there were some folks who assumed that these were single blade 77s. An expensive assumption... Fortunate for those of us who enjoy them though. :D
