GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

lpjEck5h.jpg

I was on the lists, but missed the email and "hunting season". I ended up getting one on the exchange, and I'm happy I did. GEC never ceases to impress. I love the bone color and texture, I love the thinness, the build is immaculate, and it's rock solid. The pull is pretty strong, a bit more than my ideal, but easily within specs and on par with my Stag Jack. The tip is closer to proud than I like, but I'm overly sensitive about that for some reason. Overall, this is an absolutely top notch knife. I can see this being a great user, as I think the #77 is an ideal size. Honestly, it makes me really wish I could have picked up one of the two blades (especially in abalone) and maybe one of the two other single blade styles.
Sean,

Looks good. Of course the bolsters won't patina, but they'll quickly take on a natural scuffed look in your pocket. If you throw in some change or keys with it then it'll happen real quick.
It sounds far fetched, but they can patina in the traditional sense. My sheepfoot and Anniversary Charlows both have patina, one from sitting with pizza sauce on it and the other from a friend holding it with Doritos or something on his hands and then not cleaning it off till the next day. That latter one is incredible, you can actually see his fingerprint. Whatever he was eating probably isn't good for the human body if it can do that.

Gorgeous knives, Ron!

Scott - Thanks for the compliment, that Stag Clip 77 is a real looker:thumbup:

Ron, VERY nice pairs to draw to right there:thumbup:

Paul - Thank you sir! :)

Ron, killer lineup you have there.

I only have one and I love it. Well actually something is waiting for me in the mailbox when I get home. :)
Nick - Thank you Sir, that Autumn Bone is looking good :)

Ah yes, Charlie's TC Barlows are steel bolsters so will patina very well. My single spey Charlow has alot of patina on the bolsters.

The 77 Barlows are nickel-silver except for the blade and spring which are 1095 carbon steel. The nickel-silver dulls slightly from minute scuffing in the pocket, but it takes on a nice appearance as it ages and wears.

I don't believe the clip EO mod would gain me much blade purchase.

Full credit to paulhilborn for the photo. I assumed he wouldn't mind if I did some mockup work with it. Thank you, sir.

Polymerhead, I don't know how you do that as I'm limited in my tech abilities or (inabilities) but I have no problem with that picture at all:thumbup::cool:

I have had these since last week. I finally got around today to opening all the tubes.
I wiped them all down good, oiled the joints and went out in the snow to take this photo.

Super great pic... wish I had picked up a Sheep in blackwood. Oh well... now something to search for.

Dude... how did you get the pic to do that? Crazy. Crazy cool.

Todd

One more of mine in case you missed it before.

Fit and finish is impressive. Blades came razor sharp...sharpest factory edge I've ever seen from GEC. The sheepfoot is near perfect. It will NOT be getting an EO notch for obvious reasons.

Now I need some wood and bone! I'm looking forward to the next run of these, Mike!

My daily apple is also establishing a mighty-fine patina pretty quickly.

My first stag sitting on the porch.
greg

That's really awesome stag on your knife, congrats Greg!

Received the tan sawcut clip yesterday from one of the good guys on here, thank you sir! F/F is real good. These 77's have one of the best F/F GEC's I have.

That looks good Sean. Are you using Paul's marker method, or a tea spa?
Well, I went looking for a marker but couldn't find one, so I just used straight up Minwax wood stain painted on with a q-tip. There's a combination of a few colors on there, and I did find a pen here at work that I tried as well. Mostly it's a Red Mahogany stain though.

I did another round of darkening on the bone last night and I'm pretty happy with where it is now. It's a nicely muted brown-yellow. Pretty close in color to the ~100 year old Schrade Barlow I have, which, incidentally, is really hard to capture on camera.

I really like the color of the bone, much better than the original color, great job Sean!
