GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

Chisumr, how you done anything to the scales to get that aged look. It looks great, just wondering if it got dunked in some tea or coffee?

I just chose this from Mike's offer when the stag came out. Haven't done anything to it. Thanks!!

Thought I'd post this comparison pic up of my aged Amber sawcut TC Barlow alongside my new Tan sawcut #77 Northfield Barlow. When the TC Barlow craze took off I tried to grab an ebony one but was too late. Seeing how fast they were going I grabbed the Amber quick (these were the last to go from that run). I then fretted a bit because I felt the un dyed parts of the bone clashed with the rest of the covers... As you can see I needn't have worried:)

So this pic is for anyone else who is fretting:) this time around the tan sawcut is the one I wanted because I know it'll get better and better:)

My super fat stag clip just went from safe queen to EDC! It's in the pocket and will be used as often as possible.

As others have noted, the blade came very tight. Pull is 8/10. I'm hoping it will loosen up with use and oil.

I don't know if I've ever carried a pocketknife with handles this thick. 18 mm. For comparison, my TC Barlow saw cut bone single clip measures just 10 mm thick. My 2014 Bladeforums knife, another 77 clip with stag covers, measures 13 mm wide. I probably wouldn't choose my little fatty for dress pants.

Picked this up on the exchange and gave it a quick dye job. LOL, gotta clean up that one pin I see : )

I was strictly a 3.5" and under guy, but after getting this year's BF knife, I was converted! These single blade 3.75's carry so nicely!

Thanks Primble! I used the same Guardsman furniture touch-up markers that Paulhilborn used : )

So GEC had some flexibility in how they cut, sanded, and matched up the slabs. I know some folks don't care for fat stag, and I always wanted a medium thickness. But this fat stag Northfield Barlow has converted me! It feels great in hand. Natural ergonomics make it easier to use. The texture of the stag makes it as non-slip as a natural material can be. Great purchase on the handles when the job requires it. When future Northfield stag Barlows hit the market, I will probably just ask you to pick out the thickest for me, regardless of the appearance otherwise.

Update on the fat stag Northfield Barlow as EDC:

It has been slow to patina. Maybe I'm keeping too much oil on it. The blade pull has decreased from a strong 8 to a weak 8. Need a good strong thumbnail to open this one. Heck of snap when closing!

I'm still loving the fat stag!

I think these two were about the last NF Barlows up for retail sale. Snagged them both last Tuesday, no preorder.

Trying to figure out which to keep. The depth on the bone and wood are hard to capture.

Jackpot! A lucky man you are to walk into the right place at the right time (or in this case browse to the right place at the right time :-).
Great score on both of those. I certainly don't think I could part with either as they have done such a superb job rounding the corners of the handle that it rides that much more comfortably in the pocket and is a joy to hold. As another member described, it's so smooth it's like a worry stone in your pocket although I'd never worry with either of those!

You definitely need to keep both of those! That way you have T-bone Tuesday and Wooden Wednesday covered. :) That Autumn Gold one is one of the best I've seen. Love all the black flecks in the bone.

Thanks, friends! I do feel very fortunate. I think I will keep both for now, and probably the bone forever. The blackwood I may give to a friend or family member when the honeymoon subsides, we'll see.

Not the greatest pics, but I really like the quality of this pair of Medium Barlows. And I LOVE the red bone color and milling!!

Thanks, Mike!
