GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

Thank you Nugun.
I also have 2 more 77's , but they are gifts and I did not think that I should include them.
These will be passed down to my son & son-in-laws some day , but not yet.
I have some other BARLOWS , but they are not for this thread.
These 77's compare to the very best that I have and better than most. I think that they are a great Barlow and am very grateful to Mike for making it happen.
I just need to get a STAG & PRAIRIE BONE and I think I will have enough . Or maybe not.

This just arrived in the mail today...
Thanks CK and GEC for making these available again, I wanted to try the sawcut bone covers because I love my blackwood sheepsfoot.
I really like how the sawcut bone feels, and of course I had to make it my own with an EO mod, I am still debating whether or not to use a dye marker.
Maybe in the future, I would love to see a LP spearpoint covered with ebony/rosewood.

The yellow and brown dye is more subdued in reality, the digital camera tends to over enhance the colors.

Well I followed the directions and we will see if the picture appears as if by magic for me.
Ithought I would try to show you my Newest and Oldest Barlows.

Thanks Paul and everyone who assisted in me Gett'in Done.
Have been looking at your's and everybody elses great pictures of knives ever since I stumbled onto the Forum.
I became very interested in Barlows since I found the old Russell and SEO&S and I had to buy some newer Barlows to go along with them , and thanks to Mike Latham for making them available.
Ijust thought it right to have the OLD ONES up for a good comparison.

Thanks everyone, I had to get a tan sawcut because of your pics BigBiscuit.
Old Engineer love that old russel barlow. I have been looking for one around my local gun/knife shows.

I found mine in a little Antique store and they did not know what they had and neither did I.
I originally left it , checked it out , and drove back 70 miles to get it for $5

I received two new Yankee Barlows. I think I'm only keeping the Red (as to not repeat covers) and gifting the Old Tan.

Picture 1 is the newly arrived Old Tan.
Pic 2 is my first Old Tan.
Pic 3 is the same knife in pic 2, after the dye job.
Pic 4 is the two newest Barlows.

O.E. i am fairly familiar with knife brand names but i have never seen "SEO&S". I would like to know what is stamped on the blade tangs, both sides, if they are marked, and the blade flat, as these are sometimes marked in vintage knives. And, a picture of this Barlow with blades open would be nice too. I think this would be o.k. even though this is a GEC #77 thread, because knife education is always welcome i'm sure.
thanks, kj

I will try to post some more pictures tomorrow , but I can fill you in on some information as I remember it .
SEO&S stands for Squire Elijah Oates & Son
Stamped on the blade itself , not the tang , is just Sheffield England
I think the Son was born in the 1880's and Squire Elijah died in the 1890's
The company went out of business around 1911
Handles are Bone , Bolsters and Liners are the same piece of I believe Cast Iron
The pins in the handles are steel and I believe they are the original because of the small size and being steel.
The Blade is not broken , but has been sharpened many times.
Once again the seller did not know what he had and I got for less than a Big Mac last year at the local Flea Market

Thanks for asking about it.

Great job on the EO, and I'm glad you able to get one of these amazing NF barlows, JL!

Fantastic shots of some beautiful NFs, Armando and Harry!

Kootenay Joe : Yesterday you asked for me to show some more pictures of my ol SEO&S Barlow. Out of respect to Mike Latham I am showing some pictures of it with my Autumn Gold 77 . The SEO&S IS ONE OF THE 2 Barlows that really got me interested in Barlows and the to buy my 77 Barlows from Mike. Notice on the bolsters that the SEO&S is upside down on the pile side. That is because they used the same casting to make both sides and just changed the drill fixture for the pile side or the opposite side. Saving on pattern and mold cost and economies of scale. It would appear that the pivot pin may have neen changed at some point in it's long life. It still has a Half Stop and Full Stop but the snap is pretty weak now. When I found it , it was a rusty basket case , and I just thought I needed to save it from the trash.Oh yeah , a Bolster and a Liner is made with same casting.

I think that I put on enough pictures , if not , let me know.

Send it back. I have a feeling that these were rushed. I have zero issues with the Old Tan that I just received, but the Old Red left a lot to be desired. Bolsters were scuffed up, rough dye build up on the scales, weak closing action...just very unfitting of an SFO. It looks nice now, but there's no reason for a brand new knife to require so much elbow grease.

All of the 77 single bladed knives I've gotten, each one had all sorts of scuffs or weird bone dyeing issues. The scale are nice on this one though. I do plan on sending it in, I was wondering if anybody else had his problem.
