GEC 86’s for 2023

it took years but i finally was able to get a few chuckles out of Bill, the last rendezvous I attempted to ask, I was curious if hed put that sterling 86 together, sadly he politely declined. It wouldve been nice to have a piece hand assembled by Bill 😂
When I bought my French knife in Brive de la gilliarde I asked the maker who was in the shop to check it over for me and sharpen it.

It makes it extra special if you ask me knowing he's handled it and taken some care.

I must sound like a broken record, but, my goodness, it is hard to believe how well made
these knives are. The Ebony is spectacular. I did not know if I would like it, because two blade 86’s are usually too heavy for me. That is not the case with the Ebony. The wood is light, and the punch does not seem to add as much weight as I expected. I thought I would prefer the smooth white bone version, but it is substantially heavier due to the thick dense bone. This run of 86’s is going to go down as one of the best production runs ever of any pattern. It is epic.

Here you go Johnnythefox Johnnythefox . As Charlie mentioned, it is hard to photograph the beautiful shape of the punch on the pile side. In real life, it is very elegant.

I took the liberty to move up the photograph of Bull Howard posted a few pages back. Just look at the intensity as he examines his Ebony Harness Jacks. I took the second photograph of Randy Bell working at his station a couple weeks ago on a visit to Titusville. Randy is just as intense as Bill, but in a very different way.

A few of observations about the Rider:

I like the satin finish on the Rider clip blade as a nice contrast to the polished blade on the Black Jack.

I love love love the Waynorth tang stamp as well as the "OIL THE JOINTS U.S.A." tang stamp.

It's interesting that the Rider has a GEC model code tang stamp where the Black Jack does not.

Regardless, they are both at the top of my traditional collection along with an antique New York Knife company ebony and steel boys knife.

Also... The punch is huge! It's about 7/8 inch longer than any of the awls or punches on my various SAKs and camp knives. it's longer than the secondaries on my other 86s, the Black Jack and Oil Field Jack.

This 86 run is impressive.

The forging and detailing of the punch is awesome.

The 86 pattern is such a wonderful canvas to make all sorts of cool knives on. It's been a treat to see everyone's acquisitions. I haven't heard much a a whisper regarding anywhere these are getting released but sometimes lightning strikes in my favor so I managed to land the one out of the bunch that I was really keen on.

This CC Rider is my first GEC-made Harness Jack and I couldn't have asked for a better made GEC. The Ebony is the nicest I have seen in a good long while, the pulls on both blades are quite stout, and that punch is very much a thing of beauty.

Nicely done, Charlie and GEC, this is an exquisite knife. I can't wait to put it to use.

I don't have an exhaustive collection of 86s but I am pretty pleased with the examples I do have.

The book is a nod to our Canadian Porch pals.

Love, love the feel of this one as it open and closes. Feels a hair more smooth and nice that a normal GEC. The main blade pull is EXACTLY how I like it.
Looks great!! Mine is perfection on the pulls, walk and talk as well.

I had to get one also, (Jerry, right??)!! Functionally the same knife, and nicely aesthetic!!

Very nice Charlie! The red on these appear to be much more constant than the vipers. It’s Jeremy, but I’ve been called worse 😜
