The punches were made in-house, Will!!I am told this is the same punch blade that was used on the GEC 98's. I also heard that the punch blades came from a third party. Many of my 98's have scale on the punch blades. I see very little scale on the 86 punch blades. I assume GEC polished it off (ot most of it). Maybe Charlie can comment on this? Thanks
I am referring to very little scale on the new blades. For what it's worth, I've seen scale on almost every 86 punch blade I've seen for sale and also listed on this forum. Or do you mean very little scale as an overall percentage of the actual blade ?
Thank you Charlie. Good info !!The punches were made in-house, Will!!
William made a new form for the forging, so the shape is a few millimeters different; but essentially/functionally the two are the same!!
P.S. some punches will have "scale" on their inside surface, because like many antique HJs, they are nearly impossible to polish out!!
Nice photos Travis!!..... Buffalo, NY is Charlie's birth town..... And, I lived in Buffalo as a kid.... I love seeing that tang stamp!!
Great pics, Travis!! Thanks for posting them!!!
Some of the best, buttery Gabon Ebony I've ever seen!! A great batch!!!I dont know how GEC does but they always manage some variation in the ebony!

Beautiful knife! I think the ebony is so perfect for this. But I posted to say I have the same Rega TT. I did replace the subplatter with something a little more substantial, but it’s been a heck of a turntable the last few years.I had given up on the postie coming today,I jumped when the door bell went.
Taking my time I put on some good music to open the package.
Waiting for the sun had become waiting for the HJ.
Nothing prepared me for how awesome this knife is in the hand,I had no idea.
It feels like its indestructible and heavy, though when I weighed it it wasn't that much heavier than the forum 86 knife.
I can pinch open the blade but cant open the awl with my hand.
So I raided my piggy bank looking for the perfect coin to help, looks like a 2p wins I may file the edged down for a better fit.
What an outstanding job from GEC and Charlie.
Now I can see why people become collectors.
Are all variants the same pull?
