GEC 86’s for 2023

I meant it in the most complimentary way imaginable! 🤣

Perhaps I should've gone with "decadent"... 🤔

In any case, you're an artist and visionary in my book! 🤩

A: I liked your wording!!
B: I took no offense!!
C: Thanks for the compliments!!;)

Well I got the Marrow Bone and the Rider HJ (Ebony, my first choice even though the White Bone looks stunning), so can't mope about missing the Rivertown Jack.

Like others, I've noted that the pull on the HJ's punch is stronger than the blade's. Thinking about it, this makes sense. A punch uses a rotating action, so is at more risk of closing in use than a correctly used slipjoint blade. Hence the stronger pull is both desirable and appropriate.

I expected the Marrow Bone to be the standout knife (it's a Barlow, after all), but surprisingly it's the HJ which instantly charmed me in hand, and which I can't get enough of. The Barlow will be the slow burner, I expect...

All in all a fantastic release. #86s are good strong knives which feel like they've been with us for a long time even though it only started in 2019 with the Oil Field Jack (love that knife). It's to Bill's credit that he responded to the appreciation and demand with more versions in 2021 and 2023.

Well, I can admit that I've been a bit of a negative Nancy lately.

I think what happened was that when I heard there would be a new waynorth waynorth Harness Jack on the scene, I got excited but said to myself "yeah right - you've had trouble hitting regular drops lately, you'll be lucky if you can pick up one of those marrow or yellow rose bone jobbies." Negative self talk, it's a killer. Anyhow, when I came up empty handed on the first few retail releases I think it dealt a heavy, yet unacknowledged, blow to my morale. Additionally, when initially released, the first asking price I saw kinda took the wind out of sails. "Got it" says I - "unobtainable and quite precious." My last shred of hope dissolved upon reading that their would be no CK reserve for this run. After all, if I couldn't even secure a barlow, what chance did I have for pulling an "indulgent" 🤣 Waynorth Harness Jack out of the aether?

I honestly don't know why I kept opening up the thread - probably an even split between vicarious living and a strong tendency toward masochism - but in any case, I saw a post by L lithicus reminding us that Charlie had encouraged us to "keep trying!" To be completely honest, it annoyed me a little bit at the time as I thought "Keep trying for what?" for disappointment seemed the only fruit this trying vine would bear - but deep below the morass of self-pity and defeat, some small part of me must've been inspired, for I continued to keep trying.

Imagine my surprise when I found one available and at a price more reasonable than I had seen thus far - I quite literally was in disbelief but "keep trying" rang incessantly in my poor addled head. I didn't even want to say anything here on the chance that it was some kind of scam, or that my mailman (a suspected user of illicit substances) decided to throw the package at a random passerby in a fit of whacked-out hysteria.

Against all odds, real and imagined, a new mailman (who drove back and forth in front of the house a few times, I assume just to raise the tension further) delivered my first Waynorth - a stunning 86 Harness Jack wearing Gabon Ebony covers as black as the pit of my prior despair.

As a store model, I'll use and treasure this sublime creation that, for me at least, erases the line between form and function. Thanks Waynorth for your effort and encouragement and lithicus for your timely reminder of Charlie's words. I think I'm gonna go oil the joints.

Without further ado:

Charlie had encouraged us to "keep trying!
Yay!!! Perseverance was the only way I found many of the old desirable antiques over my hobby, and it seems to help in this somewhat heated market!!
Congrats, BB, on finding one, with the added benefit of using it!!
I'm always elated when someone uses one of my productions!!!

Charlie, i have a good friend who is one of the best in training people in strength and conditioning and she has been highly successful in her chosen career. One of her sayings is so relevant to your attitude about perseverance. It is " Just Keep Turning Up - And Be Consistent, Consistent, Consistent ". The results will follow. 🥰

I'm so happy you got one!! Congrats and I'm glad things worked out 😁 They are very nice!

I managed to luck out again and just paid for another HJ 86 --this one in white bone.

This was a surprise and will compliment my ebony Rider and Black Jack as my third CC SFO-- and my Sheepsfoot HJ and ebony Rider as my third HJ.

It will also make my fifth 86. It must be a favorite GEC frame.

A hefty swell end 3 7/8" frame is pretty ideal in hand, in use and in the right kind of pocket.

Anyone else still finding NIT 2023 86s at retail or close pricing?

its so good for everyone to join the family finally,
