GEC #86 2021: Angus Jack, 2AB, Spring Street Barlow (BF Knife)

Sigh. I hate paying the scalpers and flippers, and I rarely do. But I have missed all the 86 drops and I have a feeling the current scalper rate on the well done Angus on the Bay will seem cheap a few years from now.
I don't know, honestly doesn't seem like a good investment to me. You'd get a better return buying a few shares of an S&P index fund. But everyone is in a different situation. For me 2 or 3 hundred is a lot of money for what it is (and it may be the nicest knife I have)

Lol ... yes there are probably better investments. But I do not think of these as investments. They are toys and I am just a big kid who loves his toys. I am more thinking in terms of, will I need to pay lot more in a year to get a knife I really really want (like the well done Angus)? I have several GEC knives (as do most of the folks reading this) which would cost a great deal more today than they did when I bought them. I am just thinking ahead:)

Mine should be arriving tomorrow.. I ordered a well done but after seeing the pictures the medium or medium wells look killer too with the more obvious grain.

Got really lucky with this drop.

The more I see pictures of both of the Angus Jacks together the more I lean towards medium rare. Just got a message from my GEC dealer and I shooould be able to get an Angus Jack and a 2AB Barlow.. Regardless of what I get, I'll count myself lucky. Crossing the fingers.

I picked up a well done, but after seeing some of these mediums...man these are great.

Decided to go with the darker when I had a choice. I don't know if I'll like the dark ebony or not- it's not been my thing from the pictures I see usually.

Hah, you're right, index would probably return better. I made it a point to buy GEC a <$100 a couple of years ago and now that's almost impossible, so my collection has slowed a lot.

Really like the 86 Angus Jack, plus I lucked into the rare 1 of 1 spear blade version.

That’s the way Ebony should look! The blacker the better. The black ebony is from the heart of the tree and is heavier and more dense than the lighter sapwood that the medium rare is made from. The medium rare is pretty, but not as dent resistant as the dark heartwood. Classic!!

That Angus is a pretty sweet knife. Almost pulled the trigger on it but I need to wait for that Barlow with the bone covers. Hopefully I can get one of those.

Good to know, mine is very black

I put my medium rare in my pocket yesterday for the first time, along with my keys as I do all my other knives. I was a bit surprised to find several dents in the covers last night, as my other wood knives (ebony, blackwood, snakewood, and ironwood) have been very resistant to scratching over months of carry like this. I wondered about the lighter ebony being not as dense. Not an issue for me, as I expect and like mine to get some wear with how I carry them, but just surprised to see it so quickly!

I think you are right Dylan , they each are One Heck Of knife , but IMHO the Forum Knife is the better Work Knife . But I am Partial to Lambfoot and Sheepfoot blades , but they all are beautiful and substantial knives . It is a lucky person to have one of each . Great Photo my friend .

Thank you, Harry. I think you are right, the 2019 BF knife really is a superb work horse - it's hard to beat such a sturdy blade for chorin' around the homestead. I do prefer a Lambsfoot to a Sheepfoot blade though, I find them to be far more nimble. That all said, I am looking forward to getting my Angus Jack in, I'd like to compare to the 2019 knife and see which one I'll end up favoring.

I’m a crazy stag fan but that ebony clip is the classic.

It's good to see you, Alan. Either you've gotten far quieter or we aren't crossing paths as much these days. I am very pleased with the Stag on this 86 - it's mellowed some since I've carried it a wee bit but it has amazing texture which is something I value a lot in Stag.

Really like the 86 Angus Jack, plus I lucked into the rare 1 of 1 spear blade version.

It is always a pleasure to see the context your fine collection imparts to some GEC runs, Augie. It demonstrates how superb GEC's execution can be.

I'm seriously blown away by the 86 Angus Jack. The fit and finish is the best I've seen on a GEC. This could be my favorite knife of the year.

It doesn't fit in either of my slips (TWSS 😜 ). Going to have to go pocket slip shopping again.
